Building a Stronger School Community by Adrianna - December 2025 Scholarship Essay
If I were going to run for student body president I would hope first to improve our school by giving us a sense of community and helping us to make every student be seen, feel valued, and included. A school is something more than where we show up, take tests, or go home. It must be a place where we are supported, motivated, and connected. This is perhaps the single biggest goal I have of becoming a school in which students are comfortable speaking up and feeling seen and heard. Because people don’t realize they are being heard, so many things just happen in school. I’d create regular student feedback loops, where it’s simply easier for anyone to share concerns, ideas, or suggestions. I would also challenge a whole lot more student-led things, and activities, and events not just for a couple groups but just for everyone. Whether a person participates in sports, academics, the arts, or doesn’t know who they are yet, they should feel like they fit here. Part and parcel of building community is celebrating us for who we are. There are students in our school with divergent backgrounds who have talents and interests. Rather than take those differences and polarize us, I want to incorporate them into something that unites us. I think when students feel like they fit in, they perform better, behave better at school, and make it fun coming to school. The big idea here, then would be to help all of my students view school as a community —not just a structure —and ensure everyone walks in the hallways knowing they do have a voice.
