Study Smarter, not Harder by addison - September 2026 Scholarship Essay

The purpose of studying is not only to learn the material, but also to perform well on tests and exams. It takes a conscious effort to figure out which study methods are most effective for you as an individual. Everyone learns and retains information differently, so it is important to find a study method and routine that works best for you. In other words, the goal is to work smarter, not harder.

The four main ways people process and retain information are through visual, auditory, reading/writing, and hands-on learning. I personally prefer the visual and organizational aspects of using highlighters and flashcards. Highlighting important information and key definitions helps me identify the main points and allows for quick reference, while flashcards are helpful for memorization and review. However, for true comprehension, the Pomodoro Technique works best for me. This is a time-management method where you focus wholeheartedly on one specific task for twenty-five minutes, followed by a five minute break. Blocking all unnecessary distractions allows for complete comprehension and greater absorption of the materials being studied, and taking short breaks allows my mind to refresh and reset.

When studying and learning, all four styles are often used cohesively. Combining approaches is a natural and instinctive way to optimize learning. But the strategy that has had the greatest impact of my academic success is the focused study sessions along with visual study tools. This method has proven most effective for both learning and remembering.
