Perceptions by Abigail - July 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I've always had a vibrant personality, eager to absorb knowledge from others. This has acted as a gift at times. It has allowed me to be an open-minded and curious individual, hungry to learn more. Other times, it has prevented me from acknowledging my voice. As insightful as it is to learn from other people, I realized I had been neglecting my thoughts and values, abandoning them for others I viewed to be more worthy than my own. If I could go back to my past self and give a piece of advice, I would remind her that she is not a sponge, always needing to absorb and hold other substances as my own. I would tell her that open-mindedness is a beautiful gift, but it is just as beautiful to be expressive of your thoughts and feelings. It can be overwhelming carrying everyone else's ideas or images without leaving any room for your own. Be more open to your perspective and don't deny yourself the freedom of self-expression. Just as everyone contributes their outlooks, be aware that you are just as worthy to do the same. If anything, your contribution is just as valuable as everyone else's.
