The study method that has had the greatest impact on my academic success is the Cornell Notes method. I first learned to use Cornell Notes in elementary school, and the system has continued to help me organize information throughout my education. Although my classes and assignments have become more challenging, the basic strategy still helps me identify important ideas, review what I have learned, and prepare for tests and projects.

The Cornell Notes method divides a page into sections for detailed notes, key questions or terms, and a summary. During a lesson, I record the most important information in the main notes section. I use the smaller section to identify vocabulary, questions, and ideas that I may need to review. At the bottom of the page, I summarize the lesson in my own words.

The summary is one of the most valuable parts of this method. Copying information does not always mean that I understand it. When I have to explain a lesson in my own words, I can determine whether I truly understand the subject or need additional help. If I cannot write a clear summary, that tells me which information I should review, research, or ask my teacher to explain.

Cornell Notes also make studying feel more manageable. Instead of reviewing pages of unorganized information before a test, I can focus on the key terms, questions, and summaries I have already prepared. I can cover the main notes and use the questions in the side column to test myself. This turns my notebook into a study guide and allows me to participate actively in the review process.

The method is flexible enough to help me in different subjects. In history or English, I can organize important people, events, themes, and evidence. In math, I can record formulas, example problems, and the steps needed to find an answer. In science and forensics, I can organize processes, vocabulary, observations, and conclusions. I can also add diagrams or visual examples when they help me understand a concept.

Using Cornell Notes since elementary school has taught me that strong academic performance depends on more than completing an assignment. I must understand the material, organize it, and return to it consistently. The method has contributed to my ability to maintain A’s and B’s because it gives me a reliable process, even when the subjects or expectations change.

As I prepare for college, I know that I will have greater responsibility for managing my own learning. I plan to continue using Cornell Notes at the Fashion Institute of Technology and adapt the system for courses in branding, marketing, merchandising, and design. This strategy has stayed with me for years because it does more than help me study. It helps me think, identify what matters, and take ownership of my education.
