Learning from feedback by A'Nesha - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

One of the most valuable lessons I have learned came from receiving feedback after an exam that did not go as well as I had hoped. I had spent hours studying, but my professor pointed out that I was relying too much on memorization instead of truly understanding the material. At first, I was disappointed because I believed effort alone would guarantee success. However, that feedback helped me realize that learning is about adapting, not just working harder.

Instead of becoming discouraged, I changed my approach. I began reviewing concepts more deeply, asking questions during office hours, practicing with application-based problems, and studying in ways that focused on understanding rather than memorizing. I also became more willing to ask for help when I needed it, something I had once viewed as a weakness. Over time, I saw my confidence and academic performance improve because I was learning how to think critically instead of simply recalling information.

This experience also changed my mindset beyond the classroom. As a first-generation college student, I know there will always be new challenges and moments when I need guidance. I no longer see feedback as criticism but as an opportunity to grow. Every suggestion from a professor, mentor, or peer gives me another chance to become a stronger student and a better future healthcare professional.

As I pursue my goal of becoming a pharmacist, I know that learning will never stop. Healthcare is constantly evolving, and pharmacists must be open to new knowledge and constructive feedback to provide the best care for their patients. This experience taught me that success is not measured by never making mistakes, but by having the humility to learn from them and the determination to improve. That lesson continues to shape both my education and the person I am becoming.
