I have been teaching at the elementary level for 25 years, working with special education students grades 1 through 5, and teaching in the regular classroom grades 4 and 5. My graduate research is very multi-disciplinary covering content in anthropology, biology, psychology, neuroscience, and some public health as well. As an undergraduate, I did a double major in Anthropology and Theatre & Film then went back to school to do pre-medicine and molecular biosciences. Prior to my emergence as a teacher, I was a phlebotomist for several years and worked in a research laboratory for the University of Kansas Medical Center. Outside of working as a teaching assistant and my own classes, I function as the president of the Anthropology Student Union, take dance classes, watch Mad Men and Game of Thrones, and try to keep up with my favorites sports teams.I enjoy tutoring because I get the opportunity to do more as a mentor. As a tutor, I want to help the student learn new concepts while also teaching them study skills that are usually not taught in a classroom but only get better with practice. My teaching philosophy is to encourage the student to be confident with the material versus striving for perfect memorization. Different individuals learn some things better than others and it is about finding a way to make that information important or real based on your personal memory recall. I have helped people of all ages and of all ability levels from preschool age to adults with a high EL population which has been exciting.I went to Finlandia University and received my BA in Elementary Education with minors in Math and English.I can tutor math (algebra, geometry, basic math etc), reading, ELA, study skills, health, and social studies. Myfavorite subject(s) to tutor are math and reading because I learned how to enjoy those subjects when I used to hate them so I understand the struggle.My teaching philosophy is that everyone CAN learn. Since graduation, I have continued to tutor as an employee of MATC and am currently an Educational Assistant in the Academic Support Center computer lab where I help students in a wide array of subjects, mostly dealing with computer literacy and software usage, but will often test the limits of my knowledge in other subjects. I am an advanced Microsoft Office user and I can help troubleshoot most programming languages even if I am unfamiliar with the language. I am comfortable with Visual Basic, C/C++ and have been exposed to Java, C# and other scripting languages. I have used all major operating systems including all versions of Windows and I am familiar with Mac OSX and Linux. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about database management with SQL and Microsoft Office. My goal with any student is to not just get them through a difficult course but also give them the skills needed to succeed in any class by reinforcing basic concepts and study skills. I have spent extensive time working on study strategies and effective resource utilization for various levels, from primary/secondary education through medical school admissions and board examinations.
