ACT Reading Tutor • +17 Subjects

I'm an actor, singer, dancer living in New York City. Before I moved to NYC to study Musical Theater at a conservatory, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from University of California, San Diego and received a BA in Music. While at UC San Diego, I earned a minor in Theater as well as studied Marine Science and Oceanography as a hobby. I believe in looking at academia creatively and looking at the creative arts with discipline. My philosophy is study early and from all angles, so that when the test comes, there's really no need to worry. From my conservatory actor training, I also hold many centering down techniques that can assist with test anxiety. I've always enjoyed studying, making it memorable with silly mnemonic devices, fun flashcards and color codes! My favorite subjects to tutor are English, U.S. History and Music or Dramatic arts.

I graduated from the University of Southern California in 2013 with a degree in Biological Sciences. Now I am in my second year of medical school, once again at USC, with the hopes of either being a cardiologist or dermatologist -- still have plenty of time to decide! During college I tutored two kids in 6th through 8th grade math. I really enjoyed helping them with their homework assignments, preparing them for exams, and watching them improve in their courses. During this time, I learned how to be a very patient instructor and an effective communicator. As my dad was a high school math teacher, I also learned a few things from him about how to teach difficult subjects to students. Since I am in medical school, I obviously love science involving anything that has to do with the body, so I would be very excited to assist with biology or other topics in that area. In addition to general coursework, I'm more than happy to help with exam prep for the math, science, and writing sections of the SAT/ACT (no critical reading/reasoning...not a huge fan of that stuff!). Outside of school, I really enjoy traveling to other countries during breaks or whenever I get the chance. I love experiencing new cultures and diverse foods, and seeing sites that you can't see anywhere else.

AP French Language and Culture Tutor • +10 Subjects

I lived in France for almost ten years and fell in love with the people, their language, and their country. I lived and worked in such places as Aix-en-Provence, Bourges, Clermont-Ferrand, and Paris. My primary reasons for being in France, however, were to master the French language and complete my bachelors in 1986, my masters in 1994, and my doctorate in 2001. I have extensive knowledge of French culture and have achieved near-native fluency. My overriding goal when teaching French has always been to increase fluency, both written and spoken. Inasmuch as possible I conduct classes in French. This is a daunting prospect to many students, but my greatest assets as a teacher are patience and praise. I have taught all levels of French to students as young as 10 and as old as 70. I am also certified to prepare students to take the College Board's AP French Language and Culture exam. My AP students have consistently earned 4s and 5s on this rigorous test. My favorite thing about teaching French is to meet a student with no knowledge of French and watch her/him go on to study in France, become fluent in the language and then take a degree in it. I love to inspire.

Elementary School Writing Tutor • +14 Subjects

Helping students through tutoring is something that is important to me, because the confidence students acquire through mastering academic material is extremely rewarding to see.I am a recent college graduate. I received my bachelor's degree in history with a focus in American history. During my time in college, I realized the importance of forming an argument, as well as the importance of social studies skills. In college, I helped numerous friends re-write papers by helping them to create stronger evidence-based arguments. This experience allowed me to see the true impact of having strong social studies skills, as well as the many ways these skills can enhance writing for other disciplines. I believe students may struggle to learn these skills in school due to the name-and-date way of teaching social studies, but I also believe this is where a good tutor can help.My tutoring style relies on student involvement. I believe each student learns differently and developing a plan of action together is the key to success.Outside of tutoring, I also work at a history museum in the education department. At the museum, I teach home school classes, lead k-12 tours, and work closely with the public. Outside of work, I love to hang out with my dog and do crafts.

Elementary School Tutor • +19 Subjects

I graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Elementary Education and then while teaching, got my Master's Degree in Special Education from East Carolina University. This is my 7th year as an educator and I have taught grades ranging from Kindergarten to 3rd. In college, I worked as a Resident Advisor and volunteered with many organizations including HYPE which focused on providing after school tutoring to young students :). I can tutor any elementary subject but am most comfortable supporting younger students (grades K-3) with reading, history, math, and writing or students who are older but need support with this foundational content. I have a lot of experience and enjoy supporting students with learning disabilities or other special needs.
