I recently graduated from Temple University, in Philadelphia with a Bachelors of Science in Biochemistry. I am applying to medical school this year to pursue my dream of becoming a physician. One of the reasons I am drawn to medicine is the communication to patients and teaching them about diseases. I entered tutoring because of my passion to teach and mentor others. At Temple, I was a teaching assistant for organic chemistry, which was my favorite subject in college because of how applicable it was to medicine. As a TA, I developed lesson plans and met with students one-on-one to guide them through the challenges they had in the course. I continued to tutor in organic chemistry along with general chemistry, algebra and biology at Resnick Athletic Center. Through this job I learned to work alongside students with hectic schedules and how to accommodate for their practices.

I have been tutoring and mentoring students since I was 12. I enjoy working with students not only to improve their scores and grades, but also their academic confidence! I live and breathe Biology, which was my college major as well as the field in which I actively work. In addition to Biology, General Chemistry and GRE preparation are my specialty subjects. Working in biomedical research for over four years has allowed me to constantly update, add to, and improve my knowledge of the sciences. I received my Bachelors from the University of Texas at Austin's Plan II Honors Program with a degree in Plan II. While at UT, I did a creative thesis, which ultimately resulted in a cookbook/memoir about American women, (such as my grandmother) in the kitchen. I love to write, and love helping students write as creatively as possible within the parameters of their schoolwork.I’m committed to making learning as fun and enjoyable. Having been an occasionally reluctant learner, I believe that most people are happiest when they feel that they’re learning independently, and are empowered enough to make their education their own. I want to help students create this sense of worth and importance within their studies and schoolwork, which I believe can ultimately lead to a more joyful, fulfilled life.

I am an undergraduate student at Wofford College pursuing a major in biology with a minor in business. In addition, I am a nationally certified and state certified Emergency Medical Technician and work sporadically throughout the year. I have three years of experience tutoring students in a wide array of subject areas. Specifically, I taught at the Northern Warfare Training Center in Alaska, the 101st Airborne Division Non-Commissioned Officer Academy, I was a Drill Sergeant at the Infantry School and my final assignment, I was the Senior Military Instructor at the University of Maryland (College Park).As a civilian, I have worked as a substitute teacher for Kelly Educational Services, I taught 6th grade social studies in the Colonial School District in Delaware, substituted in Escondido Union School District (language arts), and I am currently an active teacher at a charter school where I teach elementary classes as well as middle and high school social studies.Teaching is more than just instruction. It is about being passionate towards education and the future of our students. Fundamentally, all students are teachable. It is my responsibility to find what motivates each student and use that, along with respect, care, and concern for each individual, to engage each student in his or her own learning process. Students are our nation’s greatest assets, this I will never forget.Students in my classes receive direct instruction and learn from wide-ranging instructional techniques that enhance the classroom environment. My enthusiasm is contagious. Students feed from my enthusiasm, making learning fun and exciting.In my daily reflection, I focus on three questions: What was supposed to happen? What did happen? How can I make it better next time? These answers guide me to; improved lesson plans, better organization, and enhanced relationships with parents, administrators, teachers and students.I recognize that I am not alone in the classroom. There are many professionals available to assist me throughout my educational journey. I consult these experts and others to enhance my own teaching abilities, as well as offer suggestions to others as to what does and what does not work in my classroom. I attended the University of Pennsylvania for undergrad where I studied English and took many STEM courses (chemistry, organic chemistry, statistics, calculus, advanced biology) as a part of my liberal arts education. I have also taken classes at Hunter College post-grad. I went to Poly Prep Country Day School for high school. I enjoy trying new recipes and new workouts as hobbies. I was born and raised in Brooklyn.

I believe that people are in some ways, are made like trees: some trees produce fruit - contributing to society through the creation of things or having children and others provide shade - giving protection to others from the harsher elements of life. A person who is a shade tree looks for ways to serve others by providing shelter, i.e. a ride to work or just a few meals because funds are tight. Even in adverse circumstances, I have always been a shade tree and my desire to become a teacher goes back over 30 years.Currently, I am a middle school special education teacher at a local school in our area of Lynchburg. I am the proud mother of twin teenage daughters who attend high school. My first tutoring experience was of small groups of dental and medical first years while I was obtaining my PhD in Physiology at the University of Puerto Rico. Since then I have taught a variety of Science classes (General Biology, Anatomy, Anatomy and Physiology) to larger groups at the college level. As a researcher I have also mentored students (ranging from high school to graduate students) in a laboratory setting where the interactions are one-on-one and structured to each individual. I have learned that these individual interactions are the best to ensure that the student is getting help specifically where (and when) they need it, and for me (the tutor) to identify where the difficulty lies. Also, these individual interactions allow for a more comfortable relationship between mentor and mentee (tutor and student), which in turn allow for a better understanding of the materials. Although I am capable of tutoring different STEM topics, I am a biologist at heart.I am a mother of 3 young kids and understand the hardships of remote learning. My background is multicultural, which makes me fluent in Spanish, English and French.
