AP Comparative Government and Politics Tutor • +13 Subjects
I am a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law and a current PhD Candidate at Johns Hopkins University. I am working toward finishing my PhD in Political Science and am hoping to tutor student while I am in the final stages of my dissertation. While finishing my PhD, I have been teaching a variety of courses in American Politics, Constitutional Law, and legal theory. Beyond the classroom, I have worked with many students, helping some better understand the course materials, while working with others to prepare for standardized tests such as the GREs and LSATs. While I tutor in a wide range of subjects, I am most passionate about U.S. History and Government. I find that many students struggle with history and government in particular, and see it as a frustrating exercise in memorizing names and dates. In working with students, my goal is to dispel these notions, and to encourage and empower students, by showing them that the law is constantly written and rewritten, that political institutions are continually evolving, and that historical figures were dealing with the same issues and pressures that contemporary political actors face. I also have specific expertise in the area of legal writing which has aided me in preparing students for writing focused portions of standardized exams as well as improving their essay writing skills for high school and college courses. In my spare time I enjoy reading, crossword puzzles, running, rowing, and spending time with my wife and one-year-old daughter.

Since the 5th grade, I discovered I had a very distinct passion for literature, writing, and the arts. My very first poem was published by Disney in the 5th grade. As I moved on to secondary school I was not only intrigued with literature and writing, but also with the Graphic Design, drawing, and photography. I studied Graphic Design at a community college and received my Associate's degree, then I attended a four-year university and received my bachelors in English with minors in Creative Writing and African American Studies. Currently, I am enrolled in graduate school for Secondary English Education. I like to follow the "D" motto; "Determination and Dedication." Let's be determined and dedicated together. I have experience helping students in areas of English Language Arts, elementary math, and social sciences. I am a substitute teacher and, as such, work with all grade levels and subjects. I look forward to working with you!

I am most recently a graduate of Baylor University where I received a doctorate in Religion, Politics, and Society. I also have an MA in Religion from Andrews University, a law degree from Harvard, and I received my BA in Political Science from the University of Connecticut. I tutor in history, political science, GRE and SAT test prep, and in public speaking and essay writing. I enjoy political science, essay writing and public speaking the most. While working on my doctorate I taught students on the college level, and my philosophy for working with those students informs the way I tutor. I try my best to establish that we are a team, working together to get the right answers and to learn the material. I try to stay away from rigid hierarchy as much as possible, while still making sure that we get the work done. Outside of teaching I am a sports fan (Philadelphia fan forever! Eagles, Sixers, and Phillies in that order, as well as UCONN basketball), and I have recently gotten back into my childhood habit of reading comic books.

Detroit, Michigan is my birthplace and current residence. Before relocating back home in June 2008, I lived in Chicago, Illinois for ten years. My ties to "Chi-town" are abundant, so I return often to teach, freelance, and socialize. My philosophy to teaching has been cultivated through the student-centered approach to learning. The first goal is to create a positive learning environment that will engage our classroom. Thereafter, insight is enhanced by instituting comprehensive instruction, and in-depth dialogue. Last, I believe that encouraging scholarly growth equates to supporting the maturation of critical thinking. Such approach should assist in developing individual scholarly voices, ultimately refined through class discussions, assignments, and personal experience.Professionally, I am a Counselor dedicated to hospice care, bereavement counseling, and leading psycho-educational groups. One of my assignments is to conduct group counseling and instruct a financial accountability curriculum to first-time bad check offenders. This program allows me to work with men and women in three Midwest states: Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois. In 8 years, and 119 classes, I have reached 2,944 people. I love my work!!While I accept my call to serve others going through financial, life, or death transition; there is a deeper passion to teach. Through online and classroom environments, my courses include: Philosophy of Ethics, Ethical Issues in Human Service Organizations, Technologies in Human Service Organizations, The Helping Process & Self-Care, and Principles of Health & Wellness. In addition, I am a Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, Independent First Aid/CPR Instructor and Family Caregiving Leader through the Southeastern Michigan Red Cross.Living gives me great joy; especially when time is spent with my 2 nephews, 1 niece, and 2 cats (Syren & Kooper). Little people and animals allow me to breathe, and maintain a balanced - purpose driven perspective on life. Away from family, I am working out: Kangoo Jumping, and weather permitting, riding my Trikke.Remember to KISS (Keep It Simple Scholar)...

I am an attorney who graduated at the top of my class and an editor of my school's law review. I was also the Mayor of the town in which I was previously living. I am an avid photographer, a certified yoga teacher and a lover of all things French. I've lived in both Israel and France for several years each. I've also traveled much of the world and love new adventures.I've been told that I have a knack for teaching and that I can explain difficult concepts in a simple way allowing the student to move from the basic to the more complex in a systematic fashion. I prefer the Socratic Method where possible - I like to ask the questions that will lead the student to discover the answer by him/herself. Watching the light bulb go off gives me a sense of great satisfaction and joy.

I believe that all students are able to learn, they just need to be not only taught by the right instructor, but the materials at hand must be presented in a manner in which the student is learning. Furthermore, the lessons presented must be engaging, interactive, and tailored to suit each student. My ideal session is in which my students are not just using new learning tools, but their continued successes are noteworthy of praise for a continued life of exposure to a plethora of pedagogy and rigor matched to their specific needs.

I graduated from Dartmouth College in 2019 (Phi Beta Kappa), where I studied Studio Art and English. Over the last six years, I've had many opportunities to teach and tutor students of all ages. Last year I worked as Teaching Fellow for the Dartmouth Studio Art Department, which gave me a chance work one-on-one with students in a college setting. I've also worked as a teaching assistant for a high school pre-college program, volunteered in first and second grade classrooms in New Hampshire, and mentored students with special needs. While I love teaching a wide variety of subjects, I am especially excited about helping students improve their writing and reading skills. I have an extensive background in English literature and plan to pursue a career in writing. I also enjoy teaching Visual Art and Art History.I find that students learn best when they truly believe that they can be successful, so I try to create a teaching plan that reflects a student's specific learning style and abilities.
