I'm a class of 2015 Physics major from the College of William and Mary, in Williamsburg Virginia. Born and raised (and currently based!) in Northern Virginia, I have a penchant for American history in addition to the physical sciences and mathematics. I'm a voracious audio-book listener, and often drift to sleep with the words and stories of past philosophers, mathematicians, and world leaders. Beyond this, I thoroughly enjoy playing FIFA '16 on Xbox One, surfing the web, computer programming, and watching silly YouTube videos.More than anything, I'm eager to impart some of the math/physics/economics know-how, tricks, and tips I've learned over the years from taking dozens of courses from the high school level to the upper-most college level unto my students. Finally, having initially struggled with Physics and Math myself as a highschooler and college student, I'm in a unique position to empathize and guide students so they can develop the skills and understanding they need to succeed in their coursework.

I have four years of teaching experience in a variety of roles from principal instructor of college math classes to one-on-one mentoring with high school students. I am passionate about social justice, novel mathematics education, and increasing diversity in STEM majors and careers.Currently, I am working on a thesis in discrete geometry and combinatorics, as well as doing research for UCSF where I design machine vision software. I am well positioned to motivate and justify nearly every aspect of math education as being crucial for a future career in science, engineering or education. I bring this emphasis on real world relevance every time I teach.

I graduated from Northwestern University in 2013 with a double major in Economics and Legal Studies and a minor in Business Institutions. I am originally from Austin, TX and migrated north to play Division I Collegiate Women's Golf. As a student-athlete, I learned priceless time management and study techniques that allowed me to balance my course work with 20+ hours a week of athletic commitment. In my senior year, our team made Nationals for the first time in 20 years (eventually placing 15th), and I was awarded the Margaret Akerstrom award for highest female student-athlete graduating GPA (3.9). Currently, I am employed as a financial technology consultant and work with clients to build personalized solutions to address their unique needs.I developed a passion for teaching others how to be successful at a young age. I am the oldest child of three and have a brother (4 years younger) and a sister (8 years younger). Growing up, I excelled at math; however, my brother and sister struggled to understand the concepts. My parents tried to teach them, but ultimately, this resulted in more rebellion than progress. I volunteered to help and found that I really enjoyed the process. The most satisfying experience was tutoring my brother and sister and seeing them begin to develop confidence in school and finally make better grades. What makes me different from most tutors and educators is my strategic mindset. Most teachers recite their curriculums like clock work and take the key details for granted. For example, when solving for the length of the longest side of a right triangle "ABC" (Pythagorean theorem), they will show 2 examples in class without explaining why side "C" is "C". Then on standardized test, the sides are now labeled "EFG", and the child struggles to properly choose the correct inputs to the equation. Memorizing formulas is good, but understanding how and why is better. Answers are good, but repeatable problem solving skills are better. Doing practice tests is good, but focusing on the troublesome problems is better. Simply - knowledge is good, but intelligence is better. My favorite subject matter to tutor is SAT prep (especially math). The best part about the SAT is there are no surprises. Although the questions are "different", they never really "change". What this means is that even a child who regularly struggles at math, reading, or writing can memorize the framework and question types and conquer the SAT. There is a lot of satisfaction knowing that every second of tutoring SAT preparation will guarantee higher scores for the student.

I'm a Bay Area environmental policy professional working for an organic fruit & vegetable distributor in San Francisco. I discovered my passion for working with students while I served abroad in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic. As a student of languages since I was 6 years old, studying Spanish and Russian, I'm familiar with the difficulties of language study and have a lot of experience working with students to overcome these obstacles to learning. When I am not working, I spend my time reading, taking online courses in environmental and water policy subjects, and cooking. I'm also a member of an AfroCuban amateur dance company and avid salsa dancer.

I'm a New York native and Cornell University graduate. I received my Bachelor's of Science in Design & Environmental Analysis with a concentration in human factors & ergonomics. I've lived in San Francisco since August 2009 and I work as a user experience designer and consultant. I think a good education is one of the key factors to success in life and I'm passionate about teaching others and helping them learn to be successful in ways they never thought they could. In particular, I enjoy helping students discover a fondness for math and science, two fields that can be intimidating. I love balancing these more technical subjects with subjects that are more "fun" or creative, such as language or art. When I'm not working, I enjoy traveling, cooking, singing, working out, and reading.

I have been living in the Bay Area for about 6 months after graduating from Tufts University in Boston last May. At Tufts I pursued a degree in Biochemistry and Art History, graduating Magna Cum Laude. I will be pursuing a medical degree in the near future. During my time at Tufts, I spent three years teaching science to students of many ages as part of multiple outreach programs. My teaching experience covered topics from elementary chemistry demonstration to genetic research with high schoolers. While I enjoy tutoring a number of subjects, I am especially fond of science and math. My goal as a tutor is often to not only teach a subject, but get a student involved with a subject - that is, excited about it. I find students can make the biggest improvements when they feel personally engaged in the subject. Outside of academics I like bikes, coffee, and Kurt Vonnegut.

A current first grade teacher, I love working with students to achieve reading and writing goals. I am a great tutor because I have over a decade of experience teaching children. I work with students to break down information into easy to manage pieces and make sure they are understanding each step as they go along. If students still seem to be struggling, I return to more basic concepts and help them build upon what they already know. I use a variety of methods in my tutoring including visual aids, hands-on materials, books, and online sources to ensure that all students' learning styles are compatible with my lesson plans. Building a connection with my students is extremely important to me.
