The concepts covered included the area of various polygons. We began with triangles as to reaffirm the student's strength on the topic. He did well in answering questions regarding this shape without trouble. We further tested his triangle knowledge by having him find the area of this shape on a graph. Again, he solved the problem without trouble. We continued on this pattern with parallelograms as well as trapezoids, using problems from his school book. His admitted challenges with trapezoids proved true. This was demonstrated when he could not recall the formula for the area's shape. After reminding him, he applied the formula with inconsistent performance. On one problem, he would recall the formula and its application without problem, but on another he would be completely disoriented and need guidance. After further practice, he became more comfortable with trapezoid area. As such, by the end of our time (when we were solving problems from my book), he was able to solve most problems with ease. He was even able to solve a compound shape problem that gives many of my high school students problems. His progress is great.
