The student and I used this session to work on a review of her Math homework as well as to study for a vocabulary quiz in her English class. Her homework was on representing data sets in box and whisker plots. She had a good general idea of the values she needed to construct the plots but needed some review in order to find inter-quartile range and the 1.5-rule for finding outliers. We had a great discussion about how to interpret these plots, and it seemed like she understood the concepts very well. For her vocabulary, I quizzed her on the definition and part of speech of each word. Once she had a mastery of that, I asked her to use each word in a sentence, and she was able to use all of them accurately in the correct part of speech.

The student and I went over dimensional analysis. She struggled initially with the concepts, mostly due to not having learned unit conversion factors. Once she started to get familiar with some of them, she had little difficulty in solving some of her practice problems. I suggested that she memorize some of the conversion factors, which would be helpful on quizzes/ exams.

We covered trigonometric functions - converting from degree to radians. We also reviewed the math homework given. It was a new topic so he was able to cope with what was being taught. He was ready to take much more challenging questions to boost his understanding of the concept being taught. I solved numerous examples for him to understand and I left him with extra practice homework questions. He was 80% close to understanding the previous concept being taught. I would like him to keep his homework and his book for this session organized.

The student and I learned about multiplying/dividing rationals, as we went over her homework and applied what she knew already about radicals. We went over the following: how to combine/separate radicals when multiplying/dividing, distributing quantities with radical expressions, factoring radical expressions, and combining radicals (two square roots = fourth root). Since she had a solid foundation on the basics, she was able to catch on very quickly. She also thought the questions were a lot easier than expected, which is great!
