Younger students often learn best when math feels like a puzzle rather than a chore. Michelle has been tutoring kids since she was in middle school herself and brings genuine enthusiasm to topics like place value, basic multiplication, and early fraction concepts. Her experience across age groups — kindergarten through college — means she knows how to adjust her explanations for elementary learners without oversimplifying.

Multiplication tables, long division, and fractions each represent a conceptual leap for young learners, not just a new procedure. Elizabeth approaches elementary math by building number sense through visual models and real-world examples, so students understand what's happening rather than just following memorized steps.
Getting multiplication facts, place value, and basic fractions locked in early makes every future math class easier. Phonemany uses structured, goal-oriented practice to make sure younger learners aren't just getting answers right but actually understanding why the math works. A 5.0 student rating speaks to how well that approach lands with kids and families.
Early math concepts like place value, fractions, and measurement set the trajectory for everything that comes later. Aaron teaches these ideas with concrete examples — splitting objects into equal parts, counting money, reading rulers — so young learners internalize the logic behind the procedures. His patient, friendly style keeps elementary students engaged even when a topic feels tough.
Getting multiplication facts, place value, and basic fractions right at this stage shapes how a student handles every math class that follows. Vishaal uses patient, step-by-step explanations that match a younger learner's pace, making sure each concept clicks before moving on.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.
I am proud to be a part of Varsity Tutors! I am originally from San Antonio, TX; I completed my undergraduate education at Rice University in Houston where I received a bachelor's degree in Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Currently, I am in my second year of medical school at Baylor College of Medicine.
I am a junior Mechanical Engineering major at Yale, and I hope to become a Naval Aviator after college. I am also a varsity sailor, and enjoy playing music with friends when I can get some free time. I have been tutoring my fellow students throughout my entire academic career, and I would best describe my tutoring style as one that adapts to each students' needs. For example, I have always tried to frame questions in a different way so that the student can better understand the question. Some students need visual representations of numbers and systems to understand them, and others benefit more by understanding the concepts behind each formula. I prefer to tutor in math and physics, and especially with real world application problems. I hope to help students improve their standardized test scores and their understanding of the math and sciences so that they can achieve their academic goals!
I'm Solange - a recent graduate from Harvard where I studied Sociology & Women's Studies. I've been tutoring for eight years now, and have worked with a wide range of ages and in a wide range of subjects. Some of my specialties are college prep/test taking II worked in the admissions office on campus); social sciences; and literature/writing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many students struggle with the transition from memorizing procedures to understanding why math works the way it does. Common pain points include word problems (figuring out what operation to use), multi-step problems that require planning, and building confidence with fractions and decimals. With Las Vegas's average student-teacher ratio of 22:1, personalized 1-on-1 instruction can help identify exactly where a student gets stuck and rebuild their foundation from there.
The first session focuses on understanding your student's strengths, challenges, and learning style. A tutor will work through a few problems to see how your student approaches math—whether they understand the concepts or are relying on memorized steps. This gives the tutor a clear picture of where to start and helps build a personalized plan that addresses specific gaps while building confidence.
Personalized tutoring focuses on helping students see the 'why' behind math concepts, not just the 'how.' Tutors use visual models, real-world examples, and guided practice to help students recognize patterns and connections. When students understand the underlying logic, they can solve new problems independently and apply math skills across different situations—which is the foundation for success in higher-level math.
Word problems require students to translate language into math, which is a different skill than computation. Tutors teach problem-solving strategies like identifying key information, drawing pictures or diagrams, and breaking problems into smaller steps. With practice and confidence-building, students learn to approach word problems as a puzzle to solve rather than something to fear.
Math anxiety often comes from past struggles or feeling rushed in a classroom setting. One-on-one tutoring removes that pressure—there's no rushing, no comparing to other students, and every question is welcome. As students experience small wins and see themselves understanding concepts they previously found confusing, their confidence naturally grows. This positive momentum often carries over into classroom performance.
Yes. Tutors connect with you to understand what your student is learning in their Las Vegas classroom and tailor sessions accordingly. Whether your school uses a specific textbook or approach, tutors can reinforce those methods while also introducing alternative strategies that help concepts click. This alignment ensures tutoring supports and accelerates classroom learning.
Showing work helps teachers (and tutors) understand a student's thinking, making it easier to spot where confusion happens. It also helps students organize their thoughts and catch their own mistakes. Tutors model clear, organized work and guide students to explain their steps—building both mathematical communication skills and problem-solving habits that matter in higher grades.
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in elementary math and understand how to build both skills and confidence. You'll share your student's grade level, current challenges, and goals, and we'll match them with a tutor who fits their needs. The first session is a great opportunity to see if the fit works before committing to ongoing support.
