Karin McKie, MFA, compiles curriculum and personalizes teaching for a broad spectrum of students. I know there is no better, nor more crucial, calling than helping learners communicate their voices and realize their educational dreams. I specialize in tutoring all standardized tests, including the LSAT, SAT, PSAT, ACT, GRE, HSPT, ISEE, Accuplacer, STAAR, TOEFL/IELTS, ASVAB, all AP/IB English and history classes, and more. I also created and published a simple reading annotation system and related strategies specifically to tackle timed tests, as well as teaching critical reading, comparative literature, public speaking, and theater. As a professional writer and editor, I coach students in persuasive writing for schoolwork, college application and supplemental essays, internship and job applications, and the like. For decades, I've taught and lectured at universities, schools, and with individuals in Chicagoland and the Bay Area, and to online students of all ages around the world. I customize study plans with learners and their advocates to utilize existing abilities and add new techniques to reach personal and scholastic goals. I have a BS in Communications and Theater, and an MFA in Creative Writing. I have completed Continuing Education courses at Stanford, Northwestern and DePaul Universities. I'm a professional features writer and culture critic. I've edited Perspective design journal and Reed literary magazine and have performed memoir essays I've written on Chicago Public Radio. I come from a family of teachers and was fortunate to grow up at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, where my anthropologist mom was Education Director. Since early childhood, I've been immersed in multicultural and ELL education. I've devoted my personal and professional time to diversity and storytelling, starting at public TV station WETA in my hometown outside Washington, D.C., where I was certified as a trainer with Sesame Street's Preschool Education Project. I've also taught creativity and teambuilding through improvisation to all ages (as well as creating a kids summer camp), reading for the SAG Foundations BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) program, plus reading and writing skills to at-risk students through the Park District's Kraft Great Kids Program. I've assisted many of my arts marketing clients, including Barrel of Monkeys and Kidworks Touring Theatre, with youth literacy programs at schools and libraries throughout the Windy City.

I am an undergraduate student studying Economics and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. I attended the Horace Mann School in New York City. I love teaching and working with students because I feel that there is nothing more rewarding than being able to provide the extra push that students might need to be successful. I am passionate about helping students learn and making sure they are having fun doing so. I'm also happy to talk about anything a student might want to talk about, academically, extracurricularly, or otherwise.

I am good at test taking, is my ability to organize information. It's a skill I use both in my academic life, as well as professionally; as a stage manager, it is often my job to take in complicated and conflicting pieces of information (the blocking, a quick change in costumes, changes in a script) and quickly organize that information so that I can convey it to someone else. I enjoy and excel at condensing and re-communicating facts or tasks, so that they become comprehensible to someone who may not understand them the first time around.

I am a recent graduate from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in Gender & Sexuality Studies and a minor in United States History. I'm excited to join the Varsity Tutors team and begin tutoring students ranging from elementary to high school because I believe that a tailored, inspiring approach unlocks potential that students may not even realize they possess. In the current remote-learning environment, it's harder than ever to fully grasp course material I'm here to fill in these gaps and ensure students don't miss out on critical foundations or future opportunities.

I am an experienced tutor and classroom teacher with a passion for helping students learn - especially when it doesn't come easy. I love teaching math, especially since I know that it can be hard. While I specialize in working with middle and high school students, I have worked with students as young as kindergarten and those well into adulthood.

I am a graduate of Northwestern University where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Religious Studies. I am currently pursuing a masters degree in social work at the University of Chicago's School of Social Service Administration. I am passionate about tutoring because I want everyone to be able to perform academically at their highest possible level. I also think it is important that learning is not just for one assignment or one test, but rather that it sticks with you to build a solid foundation of knowledge and confidence that you can carry forward. My favorite subjects to tutor include English, SAT test preparation, math, and psychology. My approach to tutoring is to meet the student where they're at and go from there. I find that this way we can build a productive tutoring relationship where I can help individualize learning to each person's particular learning style. Outside of academic interests, I enjoy cooking, being with friends and family, traveling the world, and looking as ridiculous as possible doing Zumba.

I am a personable, easy-going tutor who wants students to feel comfortable working with me. I'm starting a PhD program in the fall and looking for a few tutoring opportunities to supplement my fellowship.

I'm hoping to eventually become a doctor. As a self-described science nerd, I'm fascinated by the intricacies of how the world around us works, and I think that is infectious to my students. One of my favorite subjects to tutor is Biology because it explains how we ourselves function. My enthusiasm has helped me make science and math engaging and accessible to the students I work with. My experience includes teaching middle school, high school, and college students in both subject specific review and test preparation. I have an approach that is centered around finding the root cause of a students struggles, be it misunderstanding of content, time management, or any other reason, and offering multiple specifically-tailored methods for the student to employ before settling on what works best for them. I aim for my clients to improve as overall students as well, so that they can be successful in the face of any future academic challenges.

I am a K-8 certified teacher, with endorsements in French and Learning and Behavior. My passions lie in reading and writing, but I love teaching all subjects. I am currently a 6th grade Learning and Behavior Specialist at a Chicago Public School. I've previously taught in preschool, third, fourth, and fifth grades. I am familiar with a variety of curriculums for all subjects including Everyday Math, Go Math, Connected Math, TouchMath, Envision Math, Lucy Caulkins Writing Program, Wilson Reading Program, Fountas and Pinnell Leveled Literacy, and several others. I am passionate about working with children and love supporting learners with their diverse needs.

I am also a published writer, with essays and articles appearing in Foreign Policy Magazine, the Oxford Encyclopedia, and other publications. In addition, I worked for two years as a foreign language instructor at the University of Washington, conducting my own class of undergraduate and graduate students, while completing my Masters Degree there. Most recently, I worked as a Teaching Assistant in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Columbia University in the City of New York while working on my PhD. I have also completed a number of teaching workshops at the University of Washington and Columbia University, as well as a course in pedagogy. Throughout this time, I continued to tutor K-12 students as well, and am comfortable working with students of all ages. Most importantly, however, I absolutely love working with students, and have a sincere passion and enthusiasm for teaching. I consider it a challenging calling, but one that has been immensely gratifying, both personally and professionally. I am a graduate of Loyola University Chicago, where I majored in political science. I am currently a law student at Chicago-Kent College of Law, and aspire one day to practice corporate law with a focus on financial compliance.
