Beyond the book by Zariah - October 2026 Scholarship Essay
When people think of baking, they usually picture following a cookbook, and simply getting the end result without a afterthought. But when I started experimenting with my own recipes—like testing yeast fermentation times or adjusting fat and liquid ratios for cinnamon rolls—I realized that baking is actually a continuous, hands-on science experiment.
Overtime of me realizing this, I wondered why a recipe fails even when you follow instructions and how much thought has to be put in for it to actually work? I stopped relying on pre-made recipes and began testing different variables myself, recording how slight changes in dough resting times, oven temperatures, or liquid ratios completely changed the final product. It shifted my understanding of math and science from abstract textbook concepts into tangible, edible results.
I learned that curiosity isn't just about asking questions; it's about having the patience to test, fail, adjust, and try again until you master the process. And I surely had to try numerous times. That project taught me that true learning doesn't just happen at a school desk—it happens when you take ownership of a problem and experiment until you find the solution. Whether in the kitchen or life, real mastery takes genuine trial and error.
