Empowering Tomorrow Through Health and Hope by Zariah - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

When I was younger, I watched my mother spend years searching for answers. For sixteen years, she struggled with fibroids, severe anemia, infertility, and eleven surgeries. I remember accompanying her to appointments and hearing conversations filled with medical terms I did not understand. What I did understand was how difficult it was for her to find information, support, and people who truly listened.
That experience inspired my dream of becoming an Obstetrician Gynecologist, but it also revealed a larger problem. Many students leave high school with little knowledge about health, wellness, or how to advocate for themselves in medical settings. If I could design a project to improve my school and community, I would create a program called "Health Empowerment for Tomorrow."
The goal of the program would be to provide students with practical health education and connect them with local healthcare professionals. Through monthly workshops, students would learn topics such as nutrition, stress management, preventive healthcare, first aid, and navigating healthcare systems. Guest speakers, including nurses, physicians, and healthcare students would share their experiences and answer questions. The program would also provide information about careers in healthcare, helping students explore opportunities they may never have considered.
I would also include a mentorship component. As someone who has volunteered in hospice care and served as a counselor's aide, I have seen how powerful it can be when people feel supported and heard. Students would have opportunities to connect with mentors who could guide them academically, professionally, and personally. Having access to trusted mentors can make a tremendous difference in a student's confidence and future goals.
This project is important to me because knowledge creates opportunities. Many challenges become less intimidating when people understand the resources available to them. My mother's experiences showed me how important self-advocacy can be, while my volunteer work taught me that education and compassion often go hand in hand. By giving students access to information and mentorship, we can help them make informed decisions about their health and future.
The greatest impact of Health Empowerment for Tomorrow would be creating a culture where students feel empowered rather than overwhelmed. They would gain practical knowledge, develop confidence, and build connections with professionals who genuinely care about their success. Those benefits would extend beyond the classroom and strengthen the community.
Community improvement begins with investing in people. By equipping students with knowledge, mentorship, and support, this project would help create healthier, more informed, and more confident future leaders. Just as my community has shaped and encouraged me, I hope to create opportunities that empower others to reach their full potential.
