Discovering the importance of fine arts in our communities by Yadiel - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
Varsity Tutors Scholarship Committee,
In my community, the education provided at our schools is often overlooked, especially when it comes to funding the fine arts. Being a part of any music group I had the opportunity to be in has shown me the importance of instrument, vocal, art, and dance, making it so that if I had the chance to design a project, I would focus it on these essential elements to human life.
If I could design a project to support the arts, I would focus it on giving to the community in every way possible while also supporting the music programs at each of the schools in the county. This project would likely be a series of fundraisers/events that measure and identify the community’s support for the arts so that this data can then be provided to the administration of each school with the hope that further funding will be provided to the arts.
Measuring community support as the main focus of this project would enable the arts programs of each school to demonstrate the value that the fine arts have on active involvement from people in the county. The reason it is necessary to identify this is because it allows administration to see the enormous impact that the arts have on showing the talent and culture developed in our schools. Being able to provide data like this also brings to light the lack of funding that fine arts teachers face, and leads to the conclusion that with further funding, schools can create an environment that cultivates growth for both the community and students. Focusing my project on the arts would allow for public involvement as well as community growth that would inevitably highlight fine art funding and showcase the importance of fine arts programs.
Exposing people to what they do not usually see from a school provides a sense of accomplishment as well as emphasis on success in the community. The chance to focus on artistic achievement made by students develops the public's view on the education provided by the school district as well as creates public efficacy - when related to decisions made by the school board. Not only would a project like this be good for furthering the fine arts programs in each K-12 school, but for creating support for the education system. Thus making it so that students graduating will have a better chance for success with the proper resources to lead them there. With this project, schools can receive stronger support from their communities, while also being able to provide students with a better chance to succeed.
By hosting events and fundraisers that measure public interest in fine arts, I can help create a community that supports school programs as well as pushes students to pursue whatever path they choose. I hope to be able to have something like this supported in the future so that one day every student will know that their talent is heard.
Best,
