Redefining Academic Success Through Challenge by Y’Kharyi - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
Throughout most of my academic journey, learning came naturally to me. I rarely struggled in math, science, social studies, or English, and I had developed study habits that worked well for me. That changed when I encountered physics in high school. For the first time, I found myself genuinely stumped by a subject and unsure of how to study or understand the material. It took me by surprise because I was not accustomed to struggling academically.
Physics forced me to change the way I approached learning. I could no longer rely on the same methods that had helped me succeed in other subjects. Instead of simply memorizing information, I had to slow down, analyze problems, connect different concepts, and understand why a solution worked. I learned to approach difficult questions from multiple angles and accept that I might not understand something immediately.
Although struggling with physics was initially frustrating, the experience ultimately strengthened my critical thinking skills. It taught me that being a strong student is not defined by how quickly I understand something, but by how I respond when I do not. Physics challenged me to become more patient, adaptable, and intentional in the way I learn.
That experience continues to influence me as a Biology major and STEM student. I now understand that encountering a difficult subject is not a sign to give up, but an opportunity to develop a new approach. Physics was the first subject that truly challenged me academically, but it also taught me how to become a stronger and more thoughtful learner.
