Turning Determination into Achievement by Tressa - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

The upcoming school year marks a pivotal moment in my journey to becoming a registered nurse. My primary aspiration is to excel in my accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program by mastering both the technical skills and the compassionate care required in healthcare. I know this program will be demanding and fast-paced, so I am committed to maintaining strong time management and self-discipline. Balancing coursework, clinical rotations, and my personal well-being will be essential. My goal is not only to pass my courses but to deeply understand and apply what I learn to provide the best care possible to future patients.

Beyond academics, I am motivated to build meaningful connections with classmates, instructors, and healthcare professionals. Nursing is a team-oriented profession, and learning from others’ experiences is key to success. During my time as a youth care worker in a juvenile detention center, I developed skills in patience, de-escalation, and empathy—qualities that will help me collaborate effectively and support my peers through the challenges of nursing school. I plan to bring this spirit of teamwork into every classroom and clinical setting.

In addition to building relationships, I want to continue strengthening my patient communication skills and cultural competence. My work as a phlebotomist has taught me the importance of making patients feel comfortable and informed, especially in vulnerable moments like blood draws. I’ve learned to explain procedures clearly and calmly, easing fears while delivering care with precision. This experience motivates me to volunteer at community health events and work part-time in healthcare during school, so I can grow my skills outside the classroom and connect with diverse patient populations.

What drives me most is the memory of a time when I was a patient myself. In the emergency room, overwhelmed by pain and fear, a nurse showed me kindness and compassion that changed my entire experience. She explained every procedure patiently, treated me like a person, and helped me feel safe in a difficult moment. That nurse inspired me to pursue nursing—not just as a job, but as a calling to offer others the same comfort and reassurance I received.

I am also motivated by a desire to serve my community’s unique healthcare needs. FHN’s service area, like many others, faces challenges with chronic illness management, preventive care, and healthcare access. I want to be part of the solution by providing excellent care, education, and advocacy to improve the health and well-being of my community.

I recognize the coming school year will bring academic and personal challenges, but I am ready to face them with determination and a clear purpose. My aspirations are more than goals; they are commitments to becoming a nurse who makes a real difference. With dedication, compassion, and support from those around me, I am confident I will make the most of this opportunity and take meaningful steps toward a lifelong career in nursing.
