Creativity in Education by Tobias - September 2025 Scholarship Essay
Over the course of the next ten years, I hope that we see more creativity incorporated into education. Traditional education relies heavily on essays, tests, and memorization, which is limiting and only acknowledges certain types of intelligence. With the wide-scale implementation of AI and access to AI essay writing tools, it has become easier for students to get around writing assignments and traditional homework. While this doubtless has negative effects on the writing skills of students who rely too heavily on these tools, the current situation with AI could force the education system to become more creative with the work it assigns to students.
Rather than relying on essays and discussion posts, what if we assigned students more creative work that encouraged them to explore a wider range of skills and types of intelligence? Assignments that require more creativity and person-to-person engagement can't be shrugged off using AI tools, and would require students to stretch their brains in new directions. Alternatively, assignments could require students to apply AI tools in creative and unexpected ways. Generally, having to think outside of the box encourages students to develop problem solving skills that will serve them later in life. Such problem solving will also be required for the education system to adapt to the new technological landscape and continue serving students well.
