From Challenge to Confidence by Tishaun - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic topic that challenged me at first was mathematics. Throughout high school and into college, I would constantly find myself struggling with concepts that seemed to come naturally to others. Most times, I would be very discouraged from spending extra time on assignments and still find myself making mistakes. However, I can remember one day I was sitting in my room alone thinking about giving up and saying Forget it; this just isn't for me, but a video on TikTok popped up on my phone, and it talked bout how struggles in college only prepare you mentally for life. I took that to heart for a reason I'm still not sure about. I told myself not to let these challenges define my capability to do things I know I can do. I limited myself to things I can't do just because I didn't get it the first time. I decided to change the way I approached learning and actually apply myself.

Rather than memorizing formulas, I began focusing on understanding why mathematical concepts worked. I spent more time reviewing examples, asking questions when I was confused, and practicing problems until I could explain the reasoning behind each solution. This shift in mindset made a significant difference. I was able to learn that success in math was not about finding shortcuts but about developing a logical process for solving problems.

As my understanding improved, I noticed that the skills I was building extended far beyond the classroom. Mathematics taught me to evaluate information carefully, recognize patterns, and think through problems step by step instead of reacting impulsively. When faced with adversity, I ask questions and became more comfortable analyzing different approaches before deciding on the best solution. These habits strengthened my critical thinking and helped me become a more confident learner.

The impact of this experience has carried into other areas of my education. Whether I am completing assignments, working on projects, or making decisions in everyday life, I now approach challenges with patience and an analytical mindset. I understand that difficult problems often require persistence, flexibility, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. Instead of becoming frustrated when I do not immediately know the answer, I see each obstacle as an opportunity to improve.

Looking back, I am grateful that mathematics challenged me. It taught me that growth comes from perseverance and that true understanding is built through consistent effort. More importantly, it gave me the confidence to face unfamiliar challenges with curiosity rather than fear. The critical thinking skills I developed through overcoming this obstacle will continue to benefit me throughout college and in my future career.
