Becoming Her by Tenyah - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
This year, I want my footsteps to echo with intention. I see this school year as a canvas where I’ll blend passion with purpose, sharpen my academic focus, and lay the groundwork for a future in marketing and service. I haven’t had a perfect academic journey, but I’ve proven I won’t back down from challenges. I worked harder, retook the classes I once struggled with, and earned A’s to prove to myself that I have the ability to accomplish academic excellence. Continuing my journey as a rising junior toward earning my bachelors degree, I reflect often on what’s shaped my determination.
Growing up in a single-parent household, I witnessed my mom’s resilience firsthand. She worked tirelessly to provide for my family, and that strength became a foundation I carry with me to this day. But even with that strength, life brought challenges I never expected. As a teenager, I stepped into a caregiving role for my niece and nephew when my older married sister could no longer care for them due to domestic violence in her household. It was a time filled with uncertainty and emotional weight — but I did my best to bring stability into their lives. I helped them academically, emotionally, and in everyday routines — and eventually watched them go from struggling in school to thriving. Although those adverse experiences may not seem atypical to some, it was a very trying time for me. That chapter shaped me into someone who’s driven not only to succeed, but also to serve.
Outside of school, I’ve volunteered at Grady Health Systems, participated in the L.A. Donation Fire Center initiative, and joined clubs like Girls Who Code — all of which have helped me grow as a student, a leader, and a young woman with purpose. I’ve kept community at the core of my journey. I’ve supported myself through college while building toward a dream, all while striving to become the kind of woman who uplifts others as she rises. This year, I aspire to deepen that impact—by stepping into leadership roles, growing my skills in my field of study, and continuing to serve in ways that reflect who I am and where I come from. What motivates me is knowing that my growth isn’t just for me—it’s for the people I want to pour into, the future I want to build, and the younger version of myself who once didn’t know this life was possible. I want to create work that uplifts, inspires, and creates opportunities. I’m determined to succeed, and with your help, I’ll be one step closer to making that future a reality.
