Finding Purpose in Fellowship by Saniya - January 2026 Scholarship Essay
Last school year, running for Student Government Vice President, unexpectedly changed my perspective. I campaigned passionately, sharing my vision with my peers in the hallways and classrooms, before and after school and brought in sweet treats and business cards including my campaign slogan. Despite my hard work, the election did not go as planned. However, as I reflected on this experience, I realized the genuine value was not in the result, but the journey itself. This experience has shaped me into an empathetic and inclusive leader, committed to creating spaces where everyone feels seen. Initially, I was so focused on communicating my ideas that I failed to recognize the different viewpoints of my peers. For example, I learned that many students felt disconnected with the school and wanted their voices heard. This broadened my understanding of school issues and taught me that true leadership involves establishing discussion and working collaboratively for meaningful change. This experience motivated me to create Black Faith & Fellowship, which aims to create a safe environment for students of color to discuss topics that they may not feel comfortable discussing in other spaces. Being the Founder of Black Faith and Fellowship is an incredibly fulfilling and humbling experience. It's a journey filled with growth, learning to understand our unique challenges and creating a safe space where each of us feel seen, heard, and supported in our faith journey. One of the most rewarding aspects is witnessing the transformation of each one of my peers as we grow in confidence, embrace our identity, and deepen each of our relationships with Christ. It is truly inspiring knowing that I have provided a platform where young people like myself feel comfortable sharing their experiences and seeking support is a testament to the importance of Black Faith and Fellowship’s mission.
