Learning Through Loss: Turning Grief Into Purpose by Rachel - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

Losing my cousin to alcohol addiction was one of the most difficult experiences of my life. His death affected me deeply and changed the way I think about learning, personal growth, and my future. Although the experience brought a lot of pain, it also taught me important lessons about listening to others, accepting feedback, and using difficult experiences as motivation to make a difference.
Before losing my cousin, I did not fully understand how addiction could affect a person, their family, and the people around them. His struggle helped me realize that people who are facing addiction need understanding, support, and access to the right resources. It also taught me not to judge someone based only on their mistakes or struggles. Instead, I learned the importance of listening and trying to understand what someone may be going through.
This experience has influenced my decision to pursue a career in a field where I can help people. I want to use my education and experiences to support individuals who may be struggling and to contribute positively to their lives. My cousin's death showed me that helping others can have a lasting impact, and it gave me a stronger sense of purpose.
The experience also changed how I respond to feedback. I have learned that feedback is not always criticism; sometimes it is an opportunity to recognize areas where I can grow. I now try to listen more carefully, ask questions, and learn from mistakes instead of becoming discouraged by them.
Although I cannot change what happened to my cousin, I can choose how I respond to his loss. His memory continues to motivate me to work toward my goals and pursue a career where I can make a difference. What began as a painful loss has become a source of strength, compassion, and determination. It has taught me that personal growth often comes from the most difficult experiences and that our challenges can help shape a meaningful future.
