Academic Challenge by Payton - July 2026 Scholarship Essay
One academic topic that challenged me at first was public speaking. Although I was comfortable talking with friends and classmates in everyday conversations, standing in front of a class to give a presentation felt completely different. I would often become nervous before speaking, worry about making mistakes, and lose confidence once everyone was looking at me. Instead of focusing on communicating my ideas, I focused on my anxiety, which made presentations much more difficult than they needed to be.
As the course continued, I realized that public speaking was about much more than simply talking in front of an audience. It required preparation, organization, critical thinking, and the ability to communicate ideas clearly and effectively. I learned how to research credible information, organize my thoughts into a logical structure, and support my main points with evidence. I also learned to anticipate questions from my audience and think about different perspectives before presenting my ideas. With consistent practice and feedback from my instructor and classmates, I became more confident each time I presented. Rather than memorizing every word, I focused on understanding my topic and connecting with my audience. This helped me speak more naturally and respond thoughtfully when asked questions.
Public speaking strengthened my critical thinking skills by teaching me to analyze information carefully, organize complex ideas into a clear message, and adapt my communication based on my audience. It also taught me to evaluate my own performance after each presentation and identify areas where I could improve. These skills have carried over into my other classes, where I now feel more comfortable participating in discussions, leading group projects, and sharing my ideas. After having to speak at an athletic mental health seminar for my school in front of hundreds of people, I tackled my anxiety and became a lot more comfortable with public speaking.
As a Sport Management major who hopes to become an athletic director, strong communication and critical thinking are essential. Public speaking challenged me at first, but it ultimately became one of the most valuable academic experiences because it helped me become a more confident communicator, problem solver, and future leader.
