Influence of Self Discovery by Oluwadurotimi - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

Recently, I was welcomed by a youth church community that provided me with spiritual and emotional support . I was able to meet youths like me who expressed their fight against their fears and insecurities. One girl told me how she also had to deal with the same insecurities of being a first generation child that led to her neglecting her passion. However, through the acceptance of Christian faith, she was able to overcome it. That community encouraged me, not to dwell on fears, but allow the fears to become my motivation. Through building my faith, I was able to express a new identity that overcomes my insecurities. My parents’ saw a change in me as one evening my mom said, “I’ve noticed you’ve seemed more joyful these days.” I felt like they weren’t just watching me reach their own dreams, but were proud of the person I was becoming. These moments made me realize the strength in vulnerability. My faith and community helped me transform fear into fuel, and insecurity into identity.
I am now fearless to express myself and open to building meaningful connections. I learned to balance my parents expectations with my own aspirations and value the strength that comes in seeking support. This transformation allowed me to step out of my shell with clear vision. Leading by finding strength in self expression and connection - lessons which continue to influence who I am today, and aspire to become. That experience filled me with the desire to aid the youth not only medically, but make a difference in their lives when it comes to their mental support. I hope to foster connections this high school senior year. Just how those I met during camp transformed mine.
