Feedback Is One of Life's Greatest Lesson by Nel'Kedris - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

During the end of my Junior Year, a teacher of mine had sat me down and spoken with me about my facial expression and how to handle situations. I was beginning to start a leadership role in an organization in high school that many members in this organization were going to be looking up to me as a role model. My teacher has been with me since my freshman year of high school, so she knows me very well, and she knows how I act, talk, and communicate as a person. She had told me that in certain issues or situations with other individuals that can leave me shocked my face presents an expression before my mouth even speaks. When she told me that I couldn’t believe the words that came out of her mouth, I thought that she was being ridiculous. I had to sit back and actually think about times when my facial expressions have showcased in many situations that have told others how I really feel about the topic as a whole. This feedback has shaped me to learn how to control my emotions in the presence of others and for myself so that individuals can’t use my emotions against me. Even though I’m learning to control the way my face acts, it’s a hard cycle that has led me to think before I speak and try to time my reactions to statements. I’m grateful to have received this feedback because it helps to improve and fix mistakes because I want to become a psychologist, and as a psychologist, I need to learn to not show emotions in front of clients. Also, feedback helps strengths a person’s performance that helps gain insights that advance an individual’s abilities and future potential. Feedback is one of life’s greatest communications because it tells a person how to fix or shape them to better themselves as human beings, and I’m glad to be able to listen and learn how to professionally and personally better myself as well.
