The Future of Learning by Nakiyah - September 2025 Scholarship Essay

Over the next ten years, I hope to see education transform into a system that not only prepares students for careers but also encourages them to create changes in their communities. Too often, schools focus heavily on standardized testing, which can limit creativity and critical thinking. As a kid, I often struggled on tests due to the overwhelming feeling it gave me. Not because I was not smart enough, but because of how I could not express my critical thinking skills in ways that helped me the best. As someone who aspires to become a lawyer, I believe that the ability to analyze information, communication clearly, and think independently is far more valuable than memorizing facts for an exam. By shifting the focus of education toward creativity, collaboration, and real world application, schools can inspire students to become confident leaders in any field they wish to pursue.

Another change I hope to see is a greater focus on equality and accessibility. Many students still face barriers to success because of financial issues, underfunded schools, or lack of resources. I believe education should serve as a ladder of opportunity, not a minor of inequality. By ensuring that every student has access to advanced courses, modern technology, and mentorship programs, it will open closed doors and ensure every student receives the right to learn. As someone passionate about fighting discrimination and ensuring fairness in law, I know that equal access to education is the foundation for building a better society.

Finally, I hope education places more emphasis on preparing students for life outside the classroom. Courses in financial literacy, civic engagement, and mental health awareness would give young people the skills and confidence they need to thrive as adults. I am grateful that my high school provides access to some of these tools, but I recognize that many schools do not. That is why I believe these subjects should be implemented and promoted across school systems worldwide. In ten years, I envision an education system that equips students not only to with a diploma, but with the knowledge, values, and resilience to contribute meaningfully to the world around them. This vision reflects the kind of future I want to help create.
