The Chemistry of Critical Thinking by Milan - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

One academic subject that challenged me the most was Chemistry. At first, I struggled to understand the concepts because the material required much more than memorization. Success in Chemistry meant understanding why reactions occurred, applying formulas correctly, and solving problems using logical reasoning. It forced me to think differently than I had in many of my previous classes.

Initially, I became frustrated because I expected to learn the material simply by reading my textbook and reviewing notes. When my first exams did not reflect the effort I was putting in, I realized I needed to change my approach. Instead of memorizing formulas, I focused on understanding the relationships between chemical principles. I began completing additional practice problems, attending tutoring sessions, asking questions during class, and breaking complex topics into smaller, more manageable concepts.

As my confidence grew, so did my critical thinking skills. Chemistry taught me how to analyze problems step by step, evaluate multiple solutions, and understand the reasoning behind an answer instead of simply memorizing it. I learned to recognize patterns, make connections between concepts, and approach challenges with patience and persistence.

Those skills have extended far beyond the classroom. My experience in Chemistry has prepared me for more advanced science courses and strengthened the analytical thinking required for a career in healthcare. It also reinforced the importance of understanding the "why" behind a problem, a lesson that directly connects to my goal of becoming a Physician Assistant specializing in women's health. As someone who experienced years of delayed diagnoses, I understand how important it is for healthcare providers to think critically, ask questions, and look beyond surface-level symptoms to identify the root cause of a patient's condition.

Although Chemistry was one of the most difficult subjects I have studied, it ultimately became one of the most rewarding. It taught me resilience, discipline, and problem-solving skills that will continue to benefit me throughout college and my future career. Most importantly, it showed me that the greatest growth often comes from the subjects that challenge us the most.
