Criticism to Confidence by Mikayla - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
In life, we are prone to setbacks, but that is what makes us human. No one is perfect all the time, and understanding that means you have a growth mindset. I learned that feedback is not just correcting mistakes but learning from them. Originally, I had a closed mindset, taking every comment to heart; however, I learned that mistakes are crucial to learning. That change in perspective has made me more open to receiving feedback.
However, it was not always that way. At first, receiving criticism was difficult. I thought my hard work was perfect without any need for correction. I remember my freshman year of high school, where I submitted my first thesis essay in full confidence that there were no errors to be found. Unfortunately, that was not the case; at the next class we peer-reviewed our work. When I received my paper, I found corrections all over. That day was very disheartening for me, as I was extremely proud of my work, only to have it returned with criticism.
After some time, I realized that I could achieve an even higher score. After carefully reviewing my work and editing, I received just that. I obtained an A+ on the paper that originally would have given me a C at best. Since that day, feedback has allowed me to learn where my work can improve, instead of taking offense. Now as a college sophomore, I look back and laugh at that time in my life, whereas now I look to receive any feedback and guidance.
That change made me more eager to change my routine in how I see my education. Instead of just completing assignments, I participate more, review my work, and even ask more questions. Instead of immediately deterring, I study more and identify unfamiliar concepts. These skills have become even more potent as I major in both accounting and economics, where I critically think and pay close diligence. I realized that perfection is what we all strive for; however, mistakes are inevitable. That does not mean you should feel discouraged; it means that you should take time to learn from them.
Not only have I learned how to accept feedback but also how to practice open-mindedness. Every day, I take the opportunity to see where I can grow rather than remain where I am. I now take more chances and opportunities and have more willingness to advance. I have learned how to take feedback and recognize it as a positive tool. Learning others’ perspectives, thoughts, and feelings can advance your work. Learning from others has made me a more confident individual because I recognized that growth does not mean knowing everything, making no mistakes, or being perfect. It is learning from shortcomings.
Feedback might seem discouraging at first, but it shows where you can improve. After learning how criticism can make you more confident, I wish this was a skill I learned earlier in life. Now that lesson will always be valuable to me even outside of school.
