Biology has always been something I have been interested in, especially the scope of human life and how our bodies work. My interest in this field of science began in the classroom, but eventually expanded outward into a clinical setting. From there, I found my passion for healthcare and fascination with life itself. Between lectures that had me hooked, education on medical and traumatic emergencies, and the field I plan to enter after college, I know that biology is the perfect major for me.
When I first took a biology class my freshman year, it instantly became my favorite. It especially piqued my interest when the teacher made connections between what happens on a cellular level and visible problems that appear as disorders in people. Additionally, whenever we performed dissections, I was always the one with the scalpel, because most of my classmates got easily grossed out by doing the cutting. This class helped me discover a valuable quality in myself—my ability to stay composed in situations that might overwhelm others. Instead of feeling uneasy, I felt curious. I was genuinely interested in learning how life is sustained in living organisms. After my freshman year, I knew I wanted to delve deeper into the study of life.
When I was 15, I joined my local first aid squad, Lanoka Harbor Emergency Medical Services. By riding on the ambulance, I was exposed to many new medical and traumatic emergencies that I was unfamiliar with prior to joining. Fascinated by what I had seen responding to first aid calls, I made the decision to attend EMT school in my Junior year to further my education in emergency services. We learned about how, when certain parts of the body don't function properly, they can cause medical emergencies, and how our bodies compensate for losing large amounts of fluid volume. I was excited to learn, just as I was in biology class my freshman year. While completing my clinical rotations at different hospitals, I was fascinated by how medical teams treated patients in the emergency room. This experience was what made me certain that I belonged in a career like this.
In the future, I want to be a Physician Assistant specializing in emergency medicine. I was recently accepted into Monmouth University’s 3+3 Biology/Physician Assistant (MS) Program. Majoring in biology will provide me with the fundamental knowledge of life to not only prepare but also excel in PA school. I can't wait to feel the excitement about learning that I did in biology class and in EMT school. I know in my heart that my deep curiosity for this field of science will make me an exceptional healthcare provider.
In the meantime, I work hard in school, especially in my AP Biology class. I also express my passion for biology by maintaining a home vivarium. I have two whites tree frogs, Honeydew and Lychee, who live in a bioactive enclosure that I put together myself. To me, they are a reminder of what I am working towards and the career I hope to establish for myself. Caring for them requires great attention to detail and respect for all living systems—qualities that are just as important in healthcare. My future goals include providing a judgment-free, inclusive environment so that all my future patients can receive the care and treatment that they need. Biology is more than just my intended major. It is the foundation for the purpose I am building for myself. I am motivated and ready to continue learning and feeding my curiosity in this field.
