Advocate by Mia - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

My aspiration for the upcoming school year is to successfully complete my final semester of the registered nurse program at Saint Joseph's University and graduate ready to provide more advanced, compassionate care. Throughout my education, I have focused on developing stronger patient assessment skills, enhancing clinical decision-making, and creating care plans tailored to the patient. These skills will prepare me to handle the complexity of nursing practice and provide holistic care to my patients.
I am motivated by both personal and professional factors. As a licensed practical nurse for 10 years, I have cared for patients in pediatrics, corrections, and geriatrics, gaining a solid foundation in clinical skills and patient care. However, advancing to the RN role will allow me to expand my scope of practice and provide a more advanced level of care for my patients.
Being a mother of a child with special needs has given me insight into the challenges caregivers face, both mentally and financially. This experience has motivated me to pursue a nursing career based on advocating and supporting individuals with special needs and their families. Earning my RN license will provide stability and opportunities that are important for my family's future. This goal is deeply personal and achieving it will mean fulfilling my calling in the nursing profession. Receiving financial support through this scholarship would help reduce the burden I face during this final semester, allowing me to focus fully on my studies and clinical rotations.
