When Calculus Became More Than a Class by McKenzie - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

AP Calculus was the first academic challenge that truly pushed me to my limits. I took this course during my Junior year, determined to prove that I could handle this difficult course as I had for others in previous years. But, this time it was different. No matter how many hours I studied, the sheer amount of practice problems I completed, or the amount of times I reviewed my notes, my test scores stayed stubbornly low. Even on the actual AP exam, the outcome didn't reflect the grueling amount of effort I had put into the class. For a long time, I saw those scores as proof that I was a failure, discouraging me and withering away my last strands of hope and confidence.
Though, what I didn't realize, was that the value of the course wasn't in the grade, but how it reshaped my thinking. While volunteering at the hospital, I began to notice calculus everywhere; The rate at which IV fluids were administered, the changing in heart rhythms across the monitors, and the way medications were dosed over time. With that, concepts that once felt other-worldly had suddenly became manageable. I wasn't just memorizing derivatives and integrals anymore, I was now recognizing how mathematics drive real-world decisions.
AP Calculus strengthened my critical thinking, not by making me a perfect test-taker, but by teaching me how to connect ideas, form questions, and understand the "why" behind the numbers. Even though my past scores were low, the growth was more than real. This class has challenged me academically, but it has also expanded the way I see the world, and has taught me how to better understand myself.
