Learning to think like an engineer by mamane - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

My first coding class challenged me more than any other subject. I came in confident. I had learned Python through YouTube tutorials. I had IT certificates. I thought I understood programming.

The class was different. It was a new sort of thinking. It required precision. It required patience. It required the ability to break complex problems into small bits. I was a mess.

I was assigned first up to write a program that sorted a list of numbers. I knew how to sort. I could do it in my head. I could do it on paper. But writing it in code was different. I had to specify every step. I had to account for every possibility. I had to think like a computer.

I spent hours on that assignment. I wrote code. I tested it. It failed. I debugged. I tested again. It failed again. I was frustrated. I was angry. I felt stupid.

I asked my teacher for help. She didn't answer. She asked me questions. She asked me to explain my logic. She asked me to go through my code step by step. She forced me to challenge my own work.

That was the turning point. I realized I had been dealing with problems emotionally as opposed to logically. I had been guessing instead of reasoning. I had been hoping the code would work, not knowing why it should.

I changed my approach. I started writing pseudocode before I wrote code. I broke problems into smaller functions. I tested each component individually. I documented my thinking. I learned to be systematic.

The process was slow. It required discipline. It required me to admit I did not know something. It required me to ask for help. But it worked. My code got better. And my confidence rose. I started to enjoy the challenge.

I also learned to work together. I joined study groups. I discussed problems with my classmates. I described my solution to others. I learnt from their methods. Teaching others deepened my own understanding.

The class became my favorite. It was hard. It required a lot from me. It pushed me out of my comfort zone. It taught me to think critically. It taught me that struggle is part of learning. It taught me that asking for help is a sign of strength.

I have now applied these lessons to every subject. I dissect complex problems. I test my thinking. I seek feedback. I continue on through difficulty. I have been a better student as a result of that class.

I am interested in Computer Engineering. The field requires constant learning. It requires critical thinking. It demands adaptation. I was aware of this from my first coding class. It taught me how to learn. It taught me how to struggle productively. It taught me how to succeed.
