Building a Healthier School Community: A Plan for Mental Health Awareness and Support by Makinaide - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could make a plan to make my school or community better I would work on making a health awareness and support program that really helps people. Mental health is a part of being okay but it is often ignored, especially at school, where students have a lot of work and social things to deal with. I think that if we talk about health openly and make sure people can get help when they need it, we can make a community where everyone feels like they are heard and can do things.

The main goal of this plan would be to stop people from being ashamed of having health issues and to get students, teachers, and parents talking about it. A lot of students are. Do not say anything because they are afraid of what people will think, or they do not know where to go for help. To make this better, the plan would have meetings and talks led by people who know about mental health, teachers, and even students who are willing to share what they have been through. These talks would be about things like managing stress, knowing when someone is anxious or depressed, and ways to deal with problems. If we can talk about these things in a way, we can make a safe space where everyone feels like they can say what they think without being judged.

Also, the plan would make groups where students can talk to each other in a safe place. Students who have been trained would lead these groups to be kind and help their friends while also making sure they get help when they need it. This way of students helping students has worked in places because students often listen to someone who is their age and knows what they are going through. It also helps young people take care of each other's health.

Moreover, the program would work with school counselors to make it easier for students to get appointments and not have to wait. Mental health professionals are often very busy, so students who need help might not get it away. If we can make people more aware of health and get them help early, we can make sure that students who need professional help can get it quickly. We could also make things like pamphlets, posters, and a website that students and parents can use to get information and tips on how to stay mentally healthy.

If we do this, it would not just help students, it would also help the whole community. When students feel like they are supported and doing okay, they are more likely to do well in school, join clubs and teams, and have healthier relationships. If everyone prioritizes health, we can make a community that is kind and inclusive, and this can help reduce things like bullying, students not coming to school, and students dropping out. This makes a cycle where a supportive community helps everyone succeed and be happy.

I really care about this plan because I myself have struggled with Mental Health and have seen friends and classmates struggle and not know how to deal with things or get help. Mental health affects every part of a person's life, so we need to talk about it and make a community that's strong and kind. If we make a health awareness and support program, my school can be a place where every student feels valued and can face life's challenges with confidence.

In the end, making people aware of health and supporting them is very important for making our school community better. By teaching people about health, making peer support groups, improving counseling services, and making resources available, we can make a community that prioritizes mental well-being. This plan would not just make individual lives better; it would also make the whole school community stronger by helping people understand, accept, and support each other. It is an idea that can change the way we think about and take care of health, making our school a model for other schools to follow.
