College Prep Project by Lelani - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

A better understanding of college and life after high school is important. There are first generation students who have no knowledge on the next steps towards prepping for college. A program aimed at informing all high school students about all the aspects of college and after high school life would be my dream project to improve my home community and old high school.

My high school had the AVID program; however, it was only for the select few. This program was deeply flawed, because of the exclusivity of being recommended. If our grades were either too high or low, we were not allowed to be in that program. That is why a project where all high school students can learn would be beneficial. Not all students know the right questions to ask in regard to college. Some might be discouraged when thinking about applying, due to money, while others are just overwhelmed by the college research and wish they knew sooner. It is important to start this teaching before senior and junior year, that way the students know how they are not overwhelmed with a to do list when that time comes around. For the students who have learned about college and have decided that they do not want to attend there will be information on trade schools, or other post high school opportunities.

This program would have parts both in school and after school. Once a year for underclassmen there will be an assembly that would get the students more acquainted with the idea of college. For upperclassmen there will be more detailed assemblies. Aside from the in-school assemblies there will be special events and talks after school that would not just inform the students, but also their guardians.

Preparing for college can be a lot. It is important to know all your resources and have a great support system. That is why a program like this is an important project for a community, since it allows all kids to have an equal start.
