More Than A Screen: How Technology Shapes My Education by LaVeya - November 2025 Scholarship Essay

For many people, technology is just a device. A way for them to submit homework or scroll on social media throughout the day. For me, it goes far beyond that. Technology has changed the way that I learn and connect with my peers. It has also given me countless opportunities, this one included, which lead to growth in and out of the classroom.
Technology is one of the many things that has shaped me into a student and leader in my school community. One of the biggest ways technology shapes my education is through convenience and simplicity. I balance many roles such as Class President and captain of my school's spirit squad. I depend on technology to keep my life in order, especially academically. Online reminders help me manage deadlines and assignments, making it easier for me to manage my time while also balancing practices and meetings.
Without this digital tool, I would easily fall behind. With it, I excel and stay disciplined with organization. Technology has also made it easier for group projects to get done in a timely manner. There was a time where me and my classmates had to meet up and finish a project. Technology makes it so that we can all edit and give our input without having to stress over when we're all free to meet.
This type of learning makes it feel like we are connected even when we leave the classroom and makes it more fun to explore ideas together. This is also the kind of communication we will have to get used to in our professional careers. So, if anything, it is just preparing us. Another impact is the access to knowledge that we have due to technology. Most of our information is found online and there are so many sources that can give way more information than the textbooks do.
Whether it be for an assignment or just out of curiosity, most of the sources are credible. Another example I would like to point out is virtual college tours. This is a very helpful thing for students that are not able to travel to the college they are interested in. Whether it be due to finances or simply not enough time, these tours give them a preview of what it consists of and can sway their decision further. As someone who wants to major in pre-law, I have been studying legal cases and reading about the work that certain organizations are doing to see exactly what I am getting myself into.
This keeps me motivated to keep going and get a head start on my future career goals. Technology has also helped me develop stronger communication skills that go beyond just my academics. As Class President, I have used digital apps to make flyers and announcements to keep my classmates engaged. Learning different ways to use social media has also taught me how to promote ideas effectively. I have realized that communication is a skill that I am going to need, especially for law.
With all this being said, having access to information is a privilege that I do not take for granted. However, that does not mean that I can use it irresponsibly either. Technology has helped me to organize my goals, manage my time, gain skills that will carry me into a higher education and beyond that. Technology has not only shaped my education, it has also shaped my future. That is why technology is so much more than a screen to me.
