Is the Use of Technology in Class a Blessing or a Burden? by Lauren - November 2025 Scholarship Essay
At first, the recent increase in technology in the classroom had me concerned. I had thoughts like “Won’t children get even more addicted to screens?” or “Are we going to learn as much if we use the internet?”. However, with time, I learned that technology in the classroom can actually be a blessing rather than something to be afraid of.
As a student with joint pain, especially in my hands, taking quick notes with a pencil and paper can be really hard sometimes. Hand cramping can be really distracting during lectures. That’s one of the ways that technology in college classrooms has benefited me. Instead of writing notes, most professors give students the option to type notes or record the lectures. Some professors even have recorded lectures online so students can go back and reference them if needed. Although typing still uses my joints, it is less painful than writing, and therefore a beneficial tool. Also, just knowing that a professor uploads their lectures takes a little bit of worry and stress off my back.
Another way technology positively impacts my education is through presentations. Most professors tend to use slide shows and presentations during lectures. I don’t know about you, but I think class would be a lot more boring if there were no visuals to look at while the professor is teaching. Not only that, but we can also learn more due to the resources that the internet allows us and our professors. Some of these resources include videos, pictures of the anatomy of different organisms, and descriptive graphs with data. All of these can be used in presentations in the classroom. They have helped me retain information I have learned and boosted my performance on exams. In addition, sometimes as students, we are assigned group presentations to give in class. Having the technology to do this can be beneficial for learning and social purposes. It boosts students’ communication skills, helps students develop friendships, and allows them to showcase what they have learned.
There are also other technological tools that can be helpful in classrooms. A couple of these might include measurement devices and data graphing websites. Not only do these devices allow us to make more accurate measurements, but they often do it much quicker. Rather than take time in class to perform measurements, we have more time to learn important concepts and perform experiments during the class period. I have personally used technology to help with measurements and data graphing in my physics lab, and it has proved to be very helpful.
As I think of all the ways I have used technology in my classes so far, I can see that it might not be so bad. In fact, I can think of more ways it has been a blessing to me than a burden. Therefore, the rising use of technology in classrooms can be looked at as a positive addition to the learning of students everywhere.
