“Finding Courage: A Lesson from Janie Crawford” by Laila - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned comes from Janie Crawford, the main character in Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. Janie’s story is one of resilience, courage, and self-discovery. Throughout the novel, she faces relationships that silence her and experiences moments where her dreams seem unreachable. Despite these hardships, Janie finds the strength to walk away from situations that hold her back. She chooses to take control of her own life, even when doing so means facing uncertainty alone. Her journey taught me that true happiness begins when we have the courage to listen to our own voice and make choices that reflect who we truly are.

Janie’s example continues to inspire me in my own life. There have been moments when I’ve doubted my ability to take risks or make changes that would lead me toward a better future. But like Janie, I’ve learned that growth often requires stepping outside of comfort zones and refusing to settle for less than what we deserve. Her story reminds me that self-worth is not defined by others’ expectations but by the confidence to pursue our own path.

As I move forward in my education and career, I want to embody that same determination. I hope to face challenges with the same courage Janie showed—to take charge of my own story and build a future that reflects both independence and purpose.
