Describe an important lesson you've learned from a fictional character in a book. by Keysi - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

One of the most important lessons I have learned from a fictional character comes from Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Atticus is a lawyer and a single father who teaches his children, Scout and Jem, the values of justice, empathy, and integrity. What inspires me the most about him is his courage to stand up for what is right, even when it is difficult or unpopular.

Atticus defends Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of a crime, despite knowing that many people in his town will judge and criticize him. Through this, I have learned that true success in life is not measured by popularity or material gain, but by doing what is morally right and helping others in need. Atticus also shows the importance of empathy, reminding Scout to “climb into another person’s skin and walk around in it.” This lesson has taught me to consider other people’s feelings and perspectives before making judgments.

In my own life, I apply Atticus’s lessons by trying to treat everyone fairly and with respect, even when it is challenging. I want to be someone who helps others and stands up for justice, no matter the circumstances. Learning from Atticus Finch has encouraged me to act with integrity and courage, and I hope that, like him, I can inspire others to do the same.
