How Self-Esteem Affects Mental Health by Kendall - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

One topic that sparked my curiosity in psychology was how self-esteem can affect a person's mental health. I wanted to understand how the way people about themselves can affect their thoughts, feelings, and behavior. Before learning about this topic I knew that confidence could affect how people act but I did not realize how much a person's opinion of themselves could affect their mental health. This topic made me want to learn more about why people sometimes struggle with the way they see themselves and how it can affect their everyday lives.

For my psychology project, I focused on the question," Is low self-esteem a major cause of psychological problems?". This question made me curious because everyone goes through different experiences and those experiences can affect people in different ways. I wanted to understand if having low self-esteem could lead to mental health struggles and why it happens. While learning about this topic, I found that low self-esteem can be connected to problems like anxiety and depression. However, I also learned that it is not only cause. A person's environment, relationships, past experiences, and other factors can also affect their mental health. This helped me understand that mental health is more complicated than just one problem or situation.

One thing that stood out to me was that you cannot always tell what someone is going through just by looking at them. A person can seem happy, confident, and comfortable around others but still struggle with how they feel about themselves. Some people may compare themselves to others but still struggle with how they feel about themselves. Some people may compare themselves to others or feel like they are not good enough even when other people see good things in them. This made me think about how people can hide their feelings because they do not want others to worry about how people can hide their feelings because they do not want others to worry about them or judge them. It also helped me realize that we should not assume we know everything about someone based on how they act around us.

As I thought more about this topic, I became interested in what causes people to struggle with their self-esteem and what can help them build a better view of themselves. I started thinking about how much the people around us can influence the way we see ourselves. For example, negative comments, pressure from others, and constantly comparing ourselves to people can affect our confidence. On the other hand, having people who support us, encourage us, and remind us of our strengths can make a positive difference. I learned that the way people treat each other matters because words and actions can affect how someone feels about themselves.

This project also helped me understand that having self-esteem does not mean thinking you are perfect or never doubting yourself. Everyone has moments when they feel unsure, make mistakes, or struggle with something. Having a healthy view of yourself means understanding that those moments do not define who you are. It means accepting that you have things to improve while still recognizing your strengths. I learned that people should not feel like they have to be perfect to be proud of themselves.

Overall, this psychology project helped me understand how a person's thoughts and feelings can affect their everyday life. It taught me that low self-esteem can be one factor connected to mental health struggles but it is important to look at the whole situation before making a conclusion. It also reminded me that everyone has different experiences so we should try to understand people instead of judging them. Most importantly, this project made me more curious about human behavior and why people think, feel, act the way they do. It showed me that research is important because it helps us look beyond what we already believe and learn something new. I finished this project with a better understanding of self-esteem and mental health and I learned that even one question can lead to a deeper understanding of people and the challenges they face.
