Research on Censorship by Kaylyn - October 2026 Scholarship Essay

During Junior year, I did a research project on how censorship is ruining literature, at first, I was very uninterested on the topic and thought it was very difficult to learn about. Though, after days of researching about it, my curiosity had sparked and I became very invested on the topic. I finally understood the seriousness of censorship on literature and how its affecting authors, and the whole world. I learned about how many topics that are important for kids to learn about is being censored and token out of books. For example, they removed topics of slavery, holocaust, and discrimination of gay people out of books due to biases. I was taught about how people biases and their own beliefs are affecting minorities representation within books.

These topics became very intriguing to me as I felt a sense of anger and disappointment for these minorities and authors. Books are a form of expression and it really shouldn’t be limited due to other people opinions and biases. Unfortunately, this is currently a problem that is happening. Some people based of the evidence I gathered during my research truly believe that it is doing more good than bad within the world. Which I fully disagree with since I read about how it is negatively affecting kids, authors, minorities, and so much more communities. During my research, I started to realize that this topic needs more attention bought to it because not many people know about this issue. Therefore, I started to share my knowledge I learned about with my friends and family. Their reactions were similar to mines as they believed it is horrible to censor minorities, people beliefs, and creative expression. I explained more to them about how I learned this from the research project and how helpful it was for my education. My mom and sister were very satisfied that I cared so much about the topic and that the school was teaching me such things. I agreed with them since if it wasn’t for school, I wouldn’t know the severity of the situation that is going on in the world right now.

This specific research project truly deepened my understanding of the issues behind censorship in literature. I can admit I was uneducated on the topic before as I didn’t know they were censoring serious history that everyone needs to know. Especially kids, since the knowledge of history can prevent further discrimination or any racism within the world that will make people feel different. Censorship is violating the right of freedom of speech especially when the speech is necessary within the world and is doing no harm. I wish this was a topic that was more taught in school since more awareness can further prevent more censorship. I learned knowledge that will stick with me for the rest of my life and I think others should gain the same. In conclusion, I am very glad that I had the chance to really research about this topic and become more educated on it.
