The Motivation That Fuels My Future by Kayleigh - August 2025 Scholarship Essay
My name is Kayleigh Thomas, and I am a Biology major at Virginia State University, originally from Florida. For the upcoming school year, my main goals are to maintain a strong academic record, gain hands-on experiences through internships in the forensic science field, and take on bigger leadership roles in student organizations. These aspirations are important to take steps towards my future career goal of becoming a forensic scientist, a profession that will combine my interest in science with my determination to make a meaningful societal impact.
My motivation is my mother and my personal journey, my mom set the example. She raised 3 children on her own which has instilled a spirit of strength and resilience into me. Being raised in a predominately white area, seeing African American female success was rarely ever highlighted, fueled my determination to rise above the expectations and grind hard in school. Going out of state for school and attending a historically black college was transformative for me. At Virginia State University, my culture is celebrated and my identity continues to be cultivated. This experience has given me the confidence to pursue my goals and has deepened my pride in myself. I strive to be an example for other young African Americans, I want them to know that you can be anything you want as long as you put in the hard work.
I have always challenged myself in the classroom whether it be critical thinking or going beyond the textbook to truly understand information. My courses in biology have not only strengthened my scientific knowledge but have also taught me the value of problem-solving, attention to detail, and perseverance. I take pride in keeping a strong academic record while actively participating in opportunities outside the classroom.
Outside the classroom I engage in study groups, participate in sports, and work at my school's welcome center. These different experiences have taught my valuable life skills, including leadership, effective problem solving, and the ability to juggle many responsibilities at once. Through these experiences I have gained confidence in addressing problems and adapting to every possible circumstance.
These goals and motivations are what keep me focused, driven, and determined throughout the school year. Receiving this scholarship would not only help reduce financial challenges but also allow me to fully dedicate myself to my academic and professional goals. I am committed to working hard in school so I can give back to my community in the future. Choosing me means selecting someone who will work hard and use this opportunity to make a lasting difference.
