Stories That Connect Us by Kayla - June 2026 Scholarship Essay
If I could design a project to improve my school and community, I would create a program called Stories That Connect Us. This initiative would encourage students, faculty, staff, and local community members to share their personal experiences, cultural traditions, and life journeys through interviews, storytelling events, and digital exhibits. The project would create a platform where diverse voices are celebrated and preserved while fostering stronger connections between people who may otherwise never interact.
In today’s fast-paced world, it is easy to overlook the experiences of those around us. Many students come from different cultural, economic, and social backgrounds, yet they often have few opportunities to learn about one another beyond the classroom. As a sociology and anthropology student, I have learned that stories are powerful tools for understanding people and the societies they live in. Every person’s experiences shape how they view the world, and listening to those experiences can help break down stereotypes, reduce misunderstandings, and build empathy.
The project would begin by training student volunteers to conduct interviews with members of the school and local community. Participants could discuss topics such as family history, traditions, educational journeys, community involvement, personal challenges, or experiences that have shaped their identities. These stories would then be compiled into a digital archive accessible to students and community members. In addition, the school could host storytelling nights, panel discussions, and cultural showcases where participants could share their experiences directly with others.
This project would benefit students in several ways. First, it would strengthen communication, interviewing, and critical-thinking skills. Students would learn how to engage respectfully with people from different backgrounds and perspectives. Second, it would create opportunities for meaningful community engagement outside the classroom. Many students want to make a difference but are unsure where to begin. By participating in this project, they would gain hands-on experience while contributing to a more inclusive campus environment.
The community would also benefit from having a space where local histories and personal experiences are documented and celebrated. Many valuable stories are never recorded and can be lost over time. Preserving these narratives would help strengthen relationships between the school and the surrounding community while highlighting the diversity that makes the community unique.
