Lessons of Kindness with Wylan Van Eck by Kathryn - October 2025 Scholarship Essay

An important lesson learned from Wylan Van Eck is that true strength lies in kindness, vulnerability, and authenticity. Throughout his journey in the "Six of Crows" duology, Wylan is constantly underestimated do to his gentle demeanor and the difficulties he faces, such as his inability to read and the trauma inflicted by his father. However, Wylan's greatest strength emerges from his unwavering compassion and how he constantly chooses to be empathetic rather than bitter.

Despite suffering neglect and abuse, Wylan remains open-hearted and loyal. Rather than allowing it to harden him, he forges strong and sincere bonds with his friends, proving that courage is not just about physical bravado but all about maintaining hope and kindness when circumstances encourage cynicism. He acts as an anchor for the group, reminding them that love and warmth are powerful forms of bravery. Wylan's intelligence and creativity with chemistry further demonstrate that contributions based on one's unique talents are just as valuable as any physical strength or cunning.

Most importantly, Wylan teaches the necessity of self-acceptance. As he lets go of the shame instilled by his father, Wylan learns that his worth does not depend on fitting societal expectations but on embracing what makes him different. His journey shows that caring deeply and believing in oneself can inspire others and lead to profound personal growth, making the world better for those around him.
