My Silver Lining by Karrington - August 2026 Scholarship Essay
As I walked to the back of the classroom, I felt defeated. Upon presenting my final exam essay, I perceived the weeks of writing, revising, and editing as a pointless effort. Waiting to meet my fate, I watched my teacher, Mr. Lochamy, assess my presentation. My mind began to swirl. Doubts stirring surrounding my academic abilities and thoughts racing over my peers’ perception of my work flooded my mind. Mr. Lochamy called me to his desk, cutting through the spiraling noise.
When I sat down, he explained my grade, breaking down each category and how I could strengthen my work. Though my grade was sufficient, I had not improved from my previous score. My superstitions were right; I really was a bad writer. Tears began to fill my eyes as I was frustrated, filled with what-ifs about what more I could have done to improve my performance. Concerned, he asked me what I was upset about. I expressed the discouragement and lack of confidence I had in my ability as a writer. The words he said next became my silver lining. Not only did Mr. Lochamy reassure me that I was more capable than I believed, but more importantly, he gave me the confidence to believe in myself that I was struggling to find alone. Though I remained upset about my performance, I was no longer ashamed of my presentation. Rather, I viewed my small improvement as something to celebrate, teaching me that improvement, no matter how small, is the true key to success.
Returning to school, I entered the classroom with a new vigor. I began to view each essay and writing assignment as a step towards improvement, not perfection, because as Mr. Lochamy taught me, it is never the true goal. As I found my footing and confidence in his class, I began to view my mistakes differently, using disappointment as building blocks towards accomplishing my goals. Molded by his feedback, I not only grew academically but personally. As someone who was constantly striving for perfection in life to deter the displeasure of others or myself, I have experienced many moments of disappointment when I am not as perfect as I believe I should be. However, Mr. Lochamy's positive words impacted this aspect of my life. I began to find confidence outside the classroom, disputing the mentality that I am meant to be this unattainable standard. Ultimately, Mr. Lochamy’s feedback reminded me that growth is not about perfection, but persistence, a message that I continue to carry through every challenge I face.
