The Worlds Full of Tech, Why Not The Schools? by Kamari - November 2025 Scholarship Essay

It is difficult to remember a time before technology was an integral part of education. Teachers lead their classes through presentations, students type up their essays, and other important staff share information through media. Technology in the school has become normal for the majority of the schools across the US. While people believe there are many cons to having technology as the main source in education, there are many pros that have come from using technology in classrooms. Technology in the classroom facilitates interactive engagement, personalized instruction, and unlimited access to resources.
Interactive digital platforms boost student engagement by using games. These websites were designed for classroom use to keep all the students engaged with everything they are being taught by their teachers. Websites like gimkit, prodigy, kahoot are all education based learning websites that teachers use to help guide their lessons, and create forms of entertainment. The impact of games increased student motivation, influenced commitment, and shifted perspective on the content they were learning in class. Using technology as a way to improve learning, or even as the alternative, has clearly proven to be beneficial in engagement levels.
Students have diverse learning needs, making differentiation difficult for teachers.. However, with the help of technology many different paths can be explored to aid the learning experience for the students. Some students learn quicker, and some students need more time. Regardless of the circumstance using websites like “Canvas,” where all the assignments are laid in advance can allow people to track their timing. Teachers can also offer different assignments and/or their accessibility. Students may prefer to type up written work or to do it by hand, and they now have more choice in how their work gets done. The freedom in choice extends to bigger assignments like projects. Technology expands the bounds of limitations when teaching large classrooms. It allows all students to be reached in a way that will help them improve in their academics.
Accessing the internet vastly expands student knowledge and research capabilities. Technology allows for students to research any topic they want faster than before, and without the limitations of whatever resources are available to them. In previous times students were limited to the books given by their local library, or by whatever information the teacher provided. However, now students can expand their understanding by a simple search in an online search engine. Students also can discover new interests with technology that they can explore safely in the school environment. The school atmosphere expands beyond learning. It is a place of socialization, and students share their discoveries from technological devices with each other. Technology creates fun trends and topics that the students, and even staff, will discuss with each other; creating new bonds.
Some will argue that technology in school has more cons than pros, which is why many schools are attempting to go phone free. However, regulated usage in schools has benefits that are causing improvements in students' learning. Many people blame the usage of phones on why the literacy rates are dropping, but it is a common consensus amongst researchers (and teachers) that this is due to lack of parental involvement. If parents are the cause, the monitored technology usage in school cannot be the cause. The negative impact of device usage would come from outside; because technology in the school, that is being used for educational purposes, doesn’t have as many cons as technology unmonitored does.
I personally remember using technology a lot in school. While it was the forefront of how I learned, until my freshman year of high school due to the pandemic, it was integrated into a lot of parts. In my elementary school we had computer class where we learned how to type and use the internet for research. My peers and I would often finish our work early then play games on the computers until we were told to move onto the next task. We even found educational game websites that we shared with our teachers, or even funny videos that they would play on free days. Technology was used for our winter parties, where we would watch movies and do activites. As I accelerated into higher grade levels the work became more tedious, but we could access it all online. Writing my papers became quicker when I could type them out, and being able to research my topics became easier. The way me and other students socialized also changed as we went from sharing games to sharing different forms of media. Some even come from different parts of the world. However, the biggest change was during the lockdown. Technology was the best ally in preventing sickness and death. Students like me were able to continue learning without putting each other at risk. We also were able to stay on track and graduate at the right time. There were many positives that came from my experience with technology in school.
Overall there are many positive impacts of having technology in the classroom as opposed to it not being there at all. In a time where technology is becoming a large part of our society, integrating it safely is more beneficial than excluding it. Students can learn from the tech and how to use it correctly.
