Perseverance by Josue - August 2025 Scholarship Essay

Life is full of strife and trouble. Ever since I was a kid, I have always been fascinated by airplanes. The prospect of flight captivated me and filled me with hope and dreams. So, once I graduated from high school, I knew I wanted to become an aerospace engineer, designing the planes that fly overhead.
Currently, I’m in my fourth and final year of college. These past four years have been filled with plenty of hardships and struggles. I’ve spent countless nights burning the midnight oil to study for upcoming exams or quizzes. I’ve filled notebook after notebook with notes for my classes, writing every bit of information I could.
I’ve failed some classes since then. These failures weighed heavily on me. I felt like I had failed myself and my family. I felt like I had fallen two steps back when I should have taken a step forward. It took some time, but I’ve learned to roll with the punches and pick myself back up. Failing didn’t mean I had failed. Failing meant I still had much to learn, much to improve on.
So, I’m still pushing forward, working hard to achieve my dreams. With this final year of college, I want to pass my classes, walk across that stage, and prove to myself I’m no failure. I want to prove to my family that I’m not giving up, and that I can stand on my own two feet. I want to prove to the world that even though I’ve fallen over, I fell forward, not backwards. I want the world to see me for the hardworking and determined man I am.
