Personal Growth by Jasmine - August 2026 Scholarship Essay

When I was an undergraduate student, I majored in accounting, which meant I had more finance, business management, and marketing classes than literature. To clarify, I did not have many classes that required daily writing or multiple papers. When I was required to take a writing course, I struggled because I was not accustomed to writing in other classes, and in high school, I had done more reading than writing. Every time I submitted a paper, I would have to do so many edits. I assumed that, as an English professor, she was pushing me harder because it was her profession. Then, I realized that others in my class were not struggling as I was. With that, once I got to my master’s program, I received the same feedback from my undergraduate professor: I have good ideas, but my writing skills are poor. Although my verbs, grammar, and thoughts were unclear, the overall message was still effective. I constantly had to rewrite many papers because of my lack of writing skills. Now that I’m older, I sometimes face the issues that led me to learn more vocabulary and improve my writing. By taking writing courses, I can improve my writing skills and gain insight into why my writing falls short.
