How Rhetoric Redefined My Mind by Jada - July 2026 Scholarship Essay

For the majority of my academic life, success felt like a formula. Throughout high school, the educational system relied heavily on a structured form of hand-holding. Teachers handed out explicit rubrics, detailed checklists, and step-by-step instructions for almost every assignment. If I had followed the provided recipe, I would have been guaranteed a good grade; this predictable routine changed abruptly when I entered my college rhetoric class. This course forced me out of my comfort zone, challenging my reliance on clear-cut directions and ultimately forcing me to develop true critical thinking skills
The culture shock began on the very first day; instead of providing the highly detailed guidelines I had grown accustomed to, my rhetoric presented open-ended prompts that left an overwhelming amount of room for interpretation. When the first major essay was assigned, I remember staring at a prompt that felt frustratingly vague. There were no formatting templates or rigid thematic guidelines to rely on. Because of this sudden shift away from high school hand-holding. I handled my initial assignments properly. I was trying to find a hidden formula that simply did not exist, and my grades reflected my confusion and anxiety.
Eventually, I realized that the lack of exact instruction was not an act of negligence on my professor's part; it was a deliberate pedagogical strategy. The professor's plan all along was to strip away our academic safety nets so we would be forced to engage in independent critical thinking. In my rhetoric class, persuasion and analysis are not about following a premade checklist; they require an author to evaluate an audience, construct an organic argument, and defend a unique perspective. By withholding a rigid roadmap, the professor compelled us to trust our own intellect and explore ideas without waiting for external validation.
Once I understood this intent, my mindset shifted; I stopped viewing the lack of direction as a barrier and began seeing it as an invitation to think freely. I learned to stop panicking in the face of ambiguity and started embracing the challenge of formulating my own academic path. This breakthrough in my rhetoric class will soon begin to ripple outward, deeply influencing how I navigate information outside the classroom.
Today, the critical thinking skills I forged in that class serve as a vital filter for the world around me. In an era dominated by rapid-fire media and opinion-heavy discourse, I no longer accept claims at face value because of my training in my rhetoric class. I have learned to take what people say with a grain of salt. Instead of rushing to judge or accepting the first persuasive argument I encounter, I now have the discipline to sit with new information. I analyze the speaker's motives, a firm resolution, or a conclusion.
Ultimately, what began as the most frustrating academic challenge of my life became the most rewarding educational milestone. My rhetoric class taught me that true learning does not happen when you are told exactly how to do it. It happens when you are forced to sit and figure it out yourself. By breaking my reliance on academic hand-holding, this course gave me the intellectual autonomy to think deeply, question effectively, and navigate the world with a genuinely critical mind.
